Anybody ever hear of this method?
I deeply gill hooked a 2.5# LMB the other day. Bleeding profusely I still tried to release it hoping for the best but to no avail. Belly up at the surface and unresponsive to my touch and encouragement.
A buddy fishing with me at the time said that he had read in a fishing magazine that if you pour 7-UP into their mouth over their gills that it will help to revive them. Crazy right? Well I happened to have a can of 7-UP that I was drinking and gave it a try. I placed the doomed fish into a fish cage for observation. 28 hours later I went back to check on it and I'll be damned, that fish was agressive and lively ready to be released. Could this method be true?

Wow. If that works it would be a good tool. It can't hurt to try it I suppose. If you think the fish might die anyway, why not give it a shot? If you try it, let us know how it works. I am going to the store now to get a case. Yes, big fishing weekend planned

I don't know but you better not use Theo's Mountain Dew.

I see no physiologic reason this should work. About the most you could expect from pouring 7-Up on a wound would be some weak antiseptic action and that is very unlikely. I also think you would have to observe the bass for a number of days to conclude it would really survive. Wound infections would not produce mortality this quickly, I am pretty sure, and I would think that starvation from inablilty to feed would also be a cause of death. The main cause of death you would rule out with 28 hr of observation would be hemorrhagic death.I fish barbless to avoid excess trauma in case of a deep hookup. That is, unless I plan on killing what I catch for a specific reason.

I placed the doomed fish into a fish cage for observation. 28 hours later I went back to check on it and I'll be damned, that fish was agressive and lively ready to be released. Could this method be true? This reminds me of my Navy days during Viet Nam. One of my guys came back from a real bad experience. He was being "rotated out" as his assignment time was up. As a going-away gift, I bought him a bottle of Chivas Regal. He chugged the whole damn bottle! Shortly after he chugged the bottle, we found him belly up and non-responsive outside our building. A friend and I got him up and walked him around for at least an hour. We made him drink a bunch of water and 7-Up. Several hours later, he was a lot more responsive. We took him to his room. About 3 or 4 hours later we went to check on him. He was gone. After a long search, we finally found him. He went shopping! He couldn't understand why we were concerned about him. So, I guess, if you are polluted to the gills, human or fish, maybe 7-Up can bring you back from the brink.

catmandoo, awesome story!
I can't afford to do the 7-Up thing. I fish with a little red cooler that holds only (9) beers if you pack the ice just right.
There's simply no room for a 7-Up.
Now before you go and get all judgemental, you don't know how many people drink those (9) beers.

Here I was ready to read how someone revived the fish in hot oil after it was dipped in batter.

Just do it...

I'm trying to think how carbonic acid, CO2, and sugar would help revive a fish. Maybe the sugar.
Bass are a lot tougher then BG. Maye he would have survived on his own.

I'm thinking there was a bit of Seagram's in there. Knocked the fish out, and by the time it came to it went bonkers in the container thinking it was in jail or something. Sunil, you can get (9) pre-packaged 7/7 concoctions in your cooler, so don't give us this crap

That is just simply amazing. I'm curious to know if anyone else has done this.

All I know is that fish should have been dead.
My buddy scoffed at my skepticism of his suggestion. The score here stands at 7-UP revival method (1) and skepticism (0)so I don't have a leg to stand on. If anybody decides to try it, please post your results on this thread. Why not put it to the test? I'll have to ask him what magazine he read it in.

I don't buy it, but I'll be sure to buy a 7-Up before I go bass fishing just in case...
