Ok I am looking at getting a THERMOMETER, and I am wondering do you check the water temp on the surface, or do you go at certain depths?

I normally record both the surface temp and the temp as far down as I can chuck the probe (2' -3' depending on the slope).

Depends on your budget. I went the low budget route, purchasing an indoor/outdoor thermometer from Lowes that had a 11' lead. I clipped a large split shot on the outside sensor, and read the pond water temp that way. It's not really fast reacting, but within a couple of minutes it's stabilized.

I purchase only top notch equipment for my pond.
People let me introduce you to the Duckmaster 1100.
Cleverly disguised as water fowl this sensitive instrument will deliver accurate readings each and every time.
Available at your finer pond supply outlets.
Duck sunglasses and string sold separately.

AP just wanted to let you know that I did purchase that cheap thermometer from Amazon and it is out in the middle of the water taped to a pole to be attacked by all the elements. It is doing well after 4 weeks. I did not even protect the top switch.
Also i recently purchased the thermostat (also from Amazon)that you recommended and plan to use it on my aerator.
Thanks for the tips on these 2 values.

http://www.fishingreminder.com/articles/...ed-anglers.htmlI have a small pong and this little cast finder gives me the surface temp plus how deep the water is in my pond. If I'm lucky it shows me fish. One of my boys got it for me at Christmas. I put it on 20lb test line. Just incase A big bass is hitting top water lures. It nice to carry to other location to see where the fish. Been working fine for 3 months. But now that just me and my little pond

I guess you could put a plastic jug on the pole if you wanted to protect it.

Sorry Magnolia Rick, I was replying to Farmer Rick. That fishing pole fish finder is neat though.

Thanks for the Great laugh!! I just about fell of the couch!! And here I though no one noticed. We actually used that thermometer for quite a while. Then one day it disappeared and so far we have not found it. It is my theory that either it migrated south for the winter, or was eaten by a hungry LMB or perhaps mauled by an angry badger.

JHAP I did notice when you first posted and debated with self for a good little while on whether to buy your top notch precision device or AP's. I finally settled on AP's because i can read it with binoculars from the shore. Now I have the "I wants" for Magnolia R's Hummingbird device. For this new pond owner at least, there is always something or a dozen somethings to want for.

I also noticed when JHAP posted about his duckmaster and got a good laugh, but beware of encouraging him it can be dangerous. Another nice toy to have would be an underwater remote video camera, some of the guys on here have them and I'm surprised there isn't any video of Nessie or a fish eating Big foot.

For this new pond owner at least, there is always something or a dozen somethings to want for. That is true for all pond owners FarmerRick. A pond is truly a hole in the ground that you pour water and tons and tons of money into. I also noticed when JHAP posted about his duckmaster and got a good laugh, but beware of encouraging him it can be dangerous. I don't know what you're talking about.
