I take fish pictures for two reasons …. The main reason is for photo records. I detest written records having spent much of my career doing that kind of stuff. If I take good photos with date of stockings, date caught with weight and measurement, I consider good documentation. Secondly, “without documentation, it’s just another fish story” ... Yesterday’s record HSB was somewhat a dilemma – I did not want to kill such a specimen but I wanted to get some good photos for documentation. Water temps were on my side for HSB survival and the old girl had put up quiet a fight – they fight much harder than a LMB and will fight until they die unless landed quickly, resuscitated and quickly released. I was well prepared having a O2 live well system recommended by our friend alvista, and some knockout drops provided by Todd Overton. Two CC’s of clove oil in my cooler livewell had her belly up and asleep allowing stress free photography. I was afraid I had killed her, but after working back and forth getting some oxygen in her gills, she wagged her tail and swam away to be caught yet another day. Fun stuff ..

Excellent fish George. How big is the pond where you caught those? I was under the impression that a HSB pond had to be pretty big. Glad to hear you didn't loose her.

Caught in 2 acre pond Cisco, but she was raised in a 1/4 acre pond with no aeration. Some of Nate's pictures of big HBS were caught in our small "grow-out" pond.

I notice George doesn't use the "Condello" angle when taking his pics. Very nice fish. I might need to look into putting some in my pond. How do they do in a LMB pond?

Could you elaborate on the clove oil knockout drops? I heard Bruce mention them and now you, so I'm very curious what this is and how to use it.

I'd like to hear more about the clove oil knockout drops as well. Heck I put a half a cup of clove oil in TJ's morning coffee at the last conference but it didn't slow him down one bit. It did cause him to curse in Arabic, which while amusing, it wasn't exactly what I was going for.

I better let the pros answer this question - don't want to kill any fish ... I really don't know anything about this stuff - only application rate for the specific product provided.

You can buy it on-line from some places and they provide directions on how to use it. I see it used a lot in the koi industry.

Thanks Ande! Good stuff. Wonder if there are more studies out there for other species.

Man, ever since I posted pics of that wild black cat my phone has been ringing off the hook with business. I should have done that a long time ago!!
I meant to comment on this huge fish that George caught. Dang good job George!! Very well done, you are worthy.
As for the clove oil calming agent: use of this product ranks among the best practices that we've adopted for working with fish. I buy the stuff in bulk and mix it up myself. If you want the details and recipe then please PM me and we'll talk about it.
Too much of the stuff and you can kill fish. I use it to kill fish that I intend to clean, seems very quick/effective/painless. Avoid this risk by being precise about your dosage and your water volume.
It's ALL about the fish!

Does this sound right? I still can't find any online to buy... How to use clove oil:
1) prepare a solution of clove oil with ethanol (94%): 9 parts ethanol + 1 part clove oli. Keep this solution in a dark bottle, preferably also in the dark. Clove oil must be mixed with alcohol before use because it is insoluble in cold (<15°C) water.
2) use this solution to anaesthize your fish. If you do not have earlier experience with clove oil with the specific species, I would advise to start with the concentration of 40 mg/l. In practice this means that you add 2 ml of the solution into 5 l of water. You should be able to immobilize the fish within about 3 minutes.
