I was reading something about aquashade vs. other products and someone said that the pure dye content is the deciding factor. I think this was an old forum post cause I can't find it again. Anyway, on the label it lists the active ingredients by percentage. If there is 23.63% acid blue 9 in a product is that the pure dye content?

Welcome, cmac! This is definitely the place to find answers to that question - I'm just not the guy who can do that for ya! Stick around and some of the most knowledgeable pond managers on the planet will chime in before long!

Great link Eric. I forgot about that one.

Today I was tempted to purchase a cheaper knock off dye for a couple of my ponds where I intensively feed larger fish. After reading the thread I think I'll stick with Aquashade.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Where can I get Aquashade or Admiral? I used to use Aquashade in my 1/2 a. pond but there came a time when it didn't seem to be available here in New York state. Tractor Supply sells a knock-off called Blue Bayou which probably isn't as good but it is available. Thanks in advance for any help on aquiring the good stuff. We use our pond mainly as a swimming hole and for recreational fishing so we really like the clean weed free water that Aquashade gave us.

Nate, Thanks but I now see that they aren't allowed to ship it to New York. Idiot powers that be would rather have weed infested waters (which we do).

Yeah you guy sure are regulated out there. Correct me if I'm wrong you need to buy a license to fish your own pond? One state over in Massachusetts they won't even let Fish & Wildlife use rotenone. Makes no sense to me.

Yeah, legally I'm supposed to buy a fishing license to fish in my back yard! Add that to the relatively long list of stupid laws in this state which I ignore!!!

Good for you!

BTW does New York still not allow the sale of largemouth bass for consumption regardless if they are raised domestically in indoor tanks? I once asked a biologist with your state why that is and his response was they were concerned someone could sell wild caught fish and they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. That's sad because just about everyone on this site can tell the difference between a pellet fed bass and a wild bass. And if there's any doubt all you need to do is open them up and see the visceral fatty tissue in a pellet fed bass.

I also believe you can catch some panfish out of public waters and resell them as long as there is no bag limit? Is that still the case?

Reference Farm Fish Pond licenses. From this site, http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7975.html,

"Pond owner's should be aware that the laws governing fishing require all persons 16 years of age and older must have a fishing license except citizen-resident landowners and lessees or members of their immediate families actually occupying and cultivating farm lands when fishing on such lands. This means that guests or friends of the pond owner must have a license to fish the pond even though it is privately-owned. Laws pertaining to seasons, size limits and daily take also apply to owners of private fish ponds unless a farm fish pond license is obtained.

Hope this helps.

I can't imagine a C.O. would come on to your private property to give a ticket to a guest that is fishing your pond because he or she didn't have a fishing license. That is just plain wrong!

Not sure if this will help your situation or not, concering the purchase and application of Aquashade or Admiral, but my local DEC office informed me of this:

http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/33127.html

If you follow up on this, please post your results.

Thanks

This may help answer your questions posted above.

http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/menugetf.cgi?COMMONQUERY=LAWS

Paragraph 6 mentions sale of fish from farm fish ponds.

(Reference NYS Environmental Conservation Law)

Welcome to pond boss "justneedit", as Russ has mentioned the owner and immediate family do not need a license but everyone else does, more crazy laws, but atleast it's not California. ;\)
I believe if the state don't know about your pond, don't tell them.
