Nate, that just might change my mind about cold weather.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Nate, thanks for the report and pictures - makes me jealous even if the water is hard .... grin
Need to get on the ponds really bad - son Jeff reports fantastic HSB fishing but crud and family issues have had me grounded.
Relish the time with your family.

Winter ice fishing is perhaps my favorite time of year to fish. Great to hang out with fellow anglers right on top of the fish and if you think bluegills and crappies taste good from the south, wait until you taste them from under the ice!

Love the diversity in your pond, n8ly!

I have always thought fish from cold water tasted better. Nate do you have issues having crappie in your pond?

Nate how big are those fish? Some of the bluegill and that crappie look like trophies.

Most of the bluegill are just regular Illinois bluegill. I don't have issues with crappie in that body of water, I have 4500 hybrid striped bass and also lots of muskie, pike, walleye, lmb, smb, and rainbow trout that pretty much wipe out all yoy fish in the lake. Not a typical fertile pond situation. Lots of very deep and clear infertile water keeps any species of fish from overpopulating.

Went out ice fishing this afternoon and didn't catch too many, but got some real good ones. Quality not quantity today.

I am going to have to make my way back over to bigbluegill.com to start posting some of these ice fishing bluegill pics again... I am coming back Bruce now that I have a few moments of spare time since it gets dark at 4:45 pm these days.

Shrimp came leftover from a christmas party..... Some day I hope to have a freshwater prawn pond for fun so eating my own shrimps could actually be a reality at some point in the future!

Nate,

Looks like you caught some nice fish today. Makes me sorry I didn't take you up on the offer to join you. Looking forward to using the fish feeder you sold me. I did see 11 deer tonight but nothing with horns.

Nate are your fish very active? I fished for an hour yesterday and only caught four fish. Two hybrids and two catfish.

James,
The fish are active, but that is relatively speaking. We are fishing right on top of them and are getting them to eat small 1/32 ounce jigs that are smaller than the waxworms we are using for bait. Oftentimes it takes a fish longer than a minute to eventually take the bait.

The big bluegill are 14 to 20 ouncers.
