I have several questions about my bass. First, pond is 1 surface acre with sloped sides dropping into a deep channel about 25 to 30 ft wide. 18' depth in deepest part of channel toward the dam. I am in Central Texas where we are warm most of the year.

I stocked 100 - 4" fingerling bass on January 31, 2002. At the time I also stocked bluegill that have reproduced nicely. At the end of March 2002 I added an additional 50 bass same size. Two weeks before the initial stocking I had five bass put in that were about 10 to 12" long. This year we have caught anywhere from 7" long to 16" long bass with the average being around 10". The fish are healthy and not overly fat but not skinny either.

First question, how mature do black bass have to be to spawn? Is it possible any spawned last year?

What can I expect for growth in the first year to fourteen months from 4" fingerling bass. I am trying to discern which fish may be which stocking or if they were spawned.

I appreciate your input.

Bill Morris

by my count that is 165 bass stocked last year into a one acre pond. even if the pond is fertilized that is too many bass. also it is not a good idea to stock large bass with bass fingerlings. larger bass will eat bass fingerlings and can severly deplete the fingerling bass. When stocking fingerling bass I usually stock 40-50 bass per acre. on the average the fish grow about 12 inches the first year. when stocking larger bass I usually stock 12-15 fish per acre in new ponds.

to answer your your question you can expect bass to spawn when they reach the 9 inch mark. the 4 inch fingerlings did not spawn last year. it is possible that the larger fish you stocked did spawn.

my advice is to have a shocking survey conducted to see how the predator/prey relationship is looking. you also need to run relative weight on largemouth bass. I doubt very seriouly that you are ever going to have issues with bass spawning in Texas. I would expect based on what you have described here that most of those 10 inch bass will never grow another inch. there is not enough forage in a 1 acre pond to feed that many bass. once they begin to spawn things are only going to get worse.

Shan, thanks for your reply. I purposely stocked that many because of various factors and looking a stocking plan that I had. We have a lot of predator birds around and the pond also has channel cats. I planned for bass mortality. The bass that are being caught are as I said 7 to 16 inches. Several in the 12 to 13 inch range. As I said the bass are healthy. I have a lot of forage all along the banks of the pond. I know I should have put the bluegills in first but had not found pondboss until after I stocked. The stocking plan I used didn't advise on intervals to stock only numbers. Really can't afford the shock treatment you suggest at this point so I will keep an eye on the fish caught and see how they progress. If I need to pull some out any suggestions on size to take out?

Bill,
I'm always preaching the relative weights, but run some. If you don't know what I'm talking about search this site or you can read an article on my website www.lakework.com. Harvest the bass that have the lowest RW's. THis will also help you predict how many you need to pull out. Good luck!

I do not know why the website is a problem coming up when it is typed in here. You can get there by typing lakework.com in your self or clicking on the link under my profile. Thanks Dave for letting me know.

I think the message board on this site does not link to your site becasue the general idea of this message board to to share our pond experiences for free and not to shamlessly advertize for personal profit. the only link back that should work on this message board is the link back to Pond Boss so people can order the magazine.

SHan I think you should reread my post! I was giving out free advice. THe article I wrote describes how to use and interpret RW's. This is free on my site along with other articles, also there are links to more free advice. Sorry Bill and Dave, for a lack of rumbling. \:D

Greg, I think Bill and I both took it that way.

Actually, Greg, your favorite computer geek customer has a much more simple explanation. You put a "." after the ".com" in the URL so that when you click it, it tries to bring up "lakework.com." ;\)

Greg, thanks for the tip on the article. It's hard to think about pulling out a 9" bass with a fat little belly and not putting him back because he doesn't meet the charts. I'll take a look at the article and see where it takes me.

Bill, I'm confused by your post. I would not pull out a fat little 9" bass. It is not statisically accurate to run RW's on bass less than 10 inches. However, just use common sense on them if you have seen enough bass you can tell the ones that are healthy and the ones that are "stunted". If you don't mind post the RW's for a few size classes of your bass. I would like to see what folks would advice on harvest after seeing the RW resutls. Good luck!

Greg, I didn't pull it out. I haven't caught enough of them to justify it. This fish did not appear to be stunted to me. I will look at the article you mentioned before I start removing any.
