Sexual dimorphism: In the male urogenital opening behind the anus; in the female, two openings, (genital and urinary) behind the anus (Moen 1959) I've been sexing my perch in the spring by milt produced by the male by gently squeezing the fish, and if none is produced, and the perch appears plump with eggs, it's a female. I was not aware that there was a different number of openings between the sexes. I will still squeeze for milt but will be taking a closer look at the openings on these fish, and also see if they are more or less obvious at spawning time or not. But as a producer in which sexing them and placing each sex in the appropriate pond or cage is imperative, I'm excited I have another way to sex them in addition to what I was doing. If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
