The golden is 14", the RBT is 12". The Goldens seem to be feeding more than the RBT. (or it's just easier to see them). It's too nasty to be out on the roads, so I decided to see if the trout would bite. 2 casts later I was finished.

Neat. It almost makes me drool. That is one fat golden.
My pond is unfortunately frozen over, but not with enough ice to venture out on it. We are expecting a major ice storm tonight and tomorrow, and then it is supposed to warm up. Maybe we'll have enough of a melt to invite a few trout in for dinner this weekend.

Mine is frozen as well, but I placed the shallow winter aerator so the water stays open in front of the feeder. I can fish without having to leave the shore. The ice isn't thick enough to safely walk on it. If I figured it right, the wr is 1.179 (14" 1.25#)
Just walking to the pond was a trick, there is a good 1/4" of ice covering everything. I've driven on many an icy road, but this ice storm is the worst that I've seen in a long while for icing up the roads. The trees and bushes are doing fine, the ground was cold and the ice is really building up on it.

That golden is plump! IF all of them are that much thicker, then something good is happening with them.

esshup - do those trout eat daily in the open water around the aerator and feeder? Interesing concept for others in northern areas. Can you provide a picture of the ice, open water and feeder? Have trout grown any since stocking? Why not take a couple more pictures and write a short 500-800 word personal story for PBoss about the fall trout stocking, aerator placement and ability to catch a few trout during ice cover? Lusk would gladly take it for one of his short articles.

I wonder why golden colored trout seem to act so differently than regular colored rainbow trout? They are after all the exact same species, just with a mutant color gene...

Bill: Yes they do eat daily. I have the feeder set to disperse food at 1:00 p.m.. I didn't take many pictures of the fish at stocking, nor measuer them, Cecil and I were too concerned about getting them into the water after our interesting return trip. They seem to have grown, but I have no benchmark. I'll take some pictures and see how they turn out. If the sun peeks out I'll try and get a video on the camera of the trout feeding. Cecil was concerned that they wouldn't feed close to the aerator, but the water is open in a pretty big area and that doesn't seem to be a problem yet. It seems the sun hasn't peeked out in a couple of weeks! Thanks for the idea, maybe I'll try to scratch something out. CJ: It's as if the goldens and rainbows are two different fish. The goldens are more aggressive towards lures, and seem to feed better. They sure are easier to see in the water! I stocked 3 RBT for every one Golden, and I've caught the goldens at a rate of 5:1 vs. the rainbows. In the daily pond visit, I noticed that there is a good sized school of FHM trapped in a 6' x 10' x 2' deep depression at the edge of the pond since the pond level has dropped. I've got to try and fish them out of there - the school is about 1' wide x 2' long. If I don't, I think they'll croak once the pond really ices over.
