Has anyone compiled a chart on mouth gape vs. body length? Theo?
Yesterday I caught a CC while fishing for BG with a redworm and a slip bobber, fishing 6' deep in about 10' water with 2# test and a #10 Owner Mosquito hook. After about 10 minutes I finally landed the CC, 25", 8.2#, mouth gape 2.5".
Just wondering if the gape is somewhat related to the body length. I measured the width of the mouth when it was closed.

CC mouth gape 10% body length = female.
CC mouth gape 15% body length = male.
See PBMag Sept/Oct 2005 for details.

See PBMag Sept/Oct 2005 for details. I just read that article last week from my back issues! You were a wee pond meister laddie back then, Theo, and I really enjoyed the article on CC and GSH. I haven't heard you talk about your CC since...are they still swimming?

I haven't heard you talk about your CC since...are they still swimming? A decreasing number of ever larger CC continue to swim in the big pond, TJ. I took out about 60 pounds of them this year, and that was 6 fish. The biggest topped 12 pounds.

So are those 5 lbs. + LMB, although it would be interesting to see the ratio of Aquamax LMB to natural forage.
I guess the same is true for the CCs.

A 12 pound channel cat is eating some serious fish! I credit my catish with a big part of my bluegill success, more so than my over-populated bass. I actually prefer the catfish in the pond, over the bass, for both sport and eating. The biggest obstacle is making sure they don't get too big because then they start to cause problems, like digging caves in the banks and eating too much.

From the mouth gape that I'm seeing, I think a comparable wieght LMB would be able to eat a much larger BG than a CC would.
