As most of you know I have a 125 gallon aquarium I have been keeping native fish in. Much to my surprise, I noticed 1 of 2 male GSF I have in there cleaning out a nest in the bottom gravel starting about a week ago. Why this time of year, I have no clue?
Anyways, I don't have any female GSF in the tank, both are males. I do have a female RBS in the tank though. Well, today I watched the male GSF and the female RBS spawning into the next and now there is quite a large number of eggs in the nest... The male GSF is actively guarding it. I am sure if they do hatch, the fry will be gobbled up in short order, but I am gonna try to salvage a few if I can.
I have successfully spawned sunfish on purpose, but never had them spawn in a community tank and never spawned this hybrid. I am estimated at least 200-300 eggs. So we'll see what comes of it. Here I was getting ready to release these buggers for the winter and they go and make babies on me!

Maybe started burning the midnight oil more or you work a shift that keeps lights on at night?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

That is my bet... Since I wasn't trying to simulate anything, I have the aquarium lights on when it's convenient for me. The light goes on at 2 pm and off at 2 am... Throw in the natural light that comes in during the day before the aquarium light comes on and well, there you have it. I guess I am just amazed they are spawning in an open aquarium like this and a GSF and RBS. They look nothing alike!

Cecil you have a way of getting me in to trouble!
GSF are feisty as it is, this 5" fish is even beating on the 10" LMB I have in the tank. Fighting tooth and nail to keep all the other fish away from his nest.

People here get me in trouble so I'm just spreading it around. Seriously I don't think you have to worry CJ. It was my post that may be a little too adult for the site, not your entire thread. Hey I kind of like that, "a little to adult for the site." Yeah that's my problem here, I'm the mature adult here.

Guys I'm curious, when eggs are laid in the tank can you put some plastic screening over them to give them some protection when they hatch. I'll bet you thought i was gonna say something to get moderated.

Hey do you think global warming had anything to do with it?

Partition the tank with a glass insert. You can drill some holes if circulation is a problem. CJ been there and done that with BG and RES. Temp & photoperiod is all it takes. Its done in tanks all the time every 30 days or so. 12 hr photo-period and 70 F water.

Thanks for the info ewest, I want to get some of the PS's to spawn in the spring. I'm not commenting on Cecils attempt to lure me to the dark side.

I did no temp manipulation which is one of the reasons I was surprised. I'm not gonna do anything fancy. If some survive cool, if not no biggie...

Not with GSF and only with BG and RES by accident. How about Virginia Longeared Giants.

Well, without BG in the gene pool I doubt anything is gonna be giant about them. Both GSF and RBS don't get all that big compared to BG.

I'd either partition the tank or move some of the other fish to ensure some survival of the eggs. Heck this could be a really cool fish.
Virginia Giants, lol Died.
