Here's a 1 lb. 5 oz. Condello strain bluegill on my certified scale that was 9 7/8 inches on my board. He backed up a little when I took the picture to make him look like he's 10 inches. (No Eric I didn't smash his nose again the board to get a shorter length and therefore higher relative weight.)

I seined my holding pond today in which I had temporarily moved about 50 large Condello strain bluegills this spring when I had problems with the biggest pond (five star moles boring though the top of the dike). Fortunately it wasn't as serious as I thought and repairs were done in early summer. However I didn't want to move them back to the big pond until now when water temps are cooler.

This fish had much more intense colors at first but they faded as it lay in the bucket. I sold this one and another to another taxidermist for taxidermy competition purposes. $95.00 for two fish.

Interesting thing about the bluegill and perch in this holding pond. They lost interest in pellets I am assuming due to the thousands of fathead minnows that reproduced in the pond. I'm sure the fatheads had something to do with this fish's weight as I believe I weighed him at not much over a pound this spring if he is the same fish.

Bruce most of the other fish i got from you in the 4 inch range two springs ago are at or close to a pound now.

Nope. No need to. With Bruce's genetics it's easy to duplicate his results. I think I'm going to poop my pants when i grow out a 2 lber though.

I'm interested especially by virtue of Dr.Dave's comment about winter weigth gain?
Our year and a half old Overton CNBG rapid growth has been in length, not width.

My last two pounder was "only" about 11.25 inches. The other one was right at 12 inches.

I believe that's right? Bruce actually probably knows better than I do. Bruce what year did Cody and I show up to pick up those 200 CSBG's? 2007?

Thanks Cecil, our CNBG seem to hit about 9-10 inches at a year and half and then begin to get wider ahd heavier.
I'm watching this 2008 class rather closely.

I don’t believe Bruce wants us to know he raised his CSBG to 12 inches and two pounds in a year and a half.
He has set the bar so high he doesn’t want us amateurs to become discouraged.

Wow 9 to 10 inches in a year and a half! What kind of lifespan do they have? Do you know?

Cecil, I don’t have the foggiest idea – that’s the reason I am asking so many questions.
This 2008 class of all male CNBG were selected from some of Overton’s best and have seen remarkable growth.
They are immature and just beginning to develop a “helmet” and broad copper bar.
I’m hitting them hard with AQMX 600 and will continue feeding all winter.

I am beginning to believe that WR’s based on length have no meaning since our CNBG hit 9-10 inches rather quickly and then hopefully get broader and wide as your CSBG.

I’ll be observing them closely the next 12 months.

Much shorter than yours Cecil. In general , IIRC for the area (not George's ponds), ½ the age of those in Cecil's area (5-6 vs. 10-12). I will check that and post with results.

Is 10 to 12 years fish in the wild vs. fed fish in ponds that have been selected for fast growth? I would assume fast growing fish may not live as long as their slower growing wild counterparts?

Reported #s on fish (assume wild) and not in your and George's ponds. But I bet the ratio is close irrespective .

I have seen in literature that southern fish have a longer growing season but don't live as long as northern fish.
