Hey all,
Would it help if I put patches of gravel here in there in my watershed streams to help filter the water or does that not help it? One part of my watershed is coming from a farmers field that does have cows once in a while in it. I know I am more than likely getting to much nutrience from that field. What else could I do to stop some of that. I don't want to lose the water but don't need all the nutrience either.
Thanks,

It will be hard to remove any dissolved nutrients without some sort of plant growth, like in the pre-pond bog some PMs use.
Anything (including gravel filters) that slows the water down while it is headed towards the pond will help reduce mechanically suspended sediment and manure.

Maybe after tomorrow I will have some info on this that I don't already. Heading up to Bath Michigan to the Michigan Conservancy for the last Lake Leader Institute where the biggest topic of the day is Watershed Planning - The Big Picture - by some PhD type, looking forward to it, presenting my project, getting my picture taken, and GRADUATING!

RC, you might want to consider building some artificial islands for your pond, the plants on them can help in using up excess nutrients and also provide food and shelter for your fish.

I think with Michigan it is a very big issue, all the lakes, you know? I just read that airports are going to have to change with what happens with the de-icing chemicals, they are going to have to catch it now. I have a section of my presentation about Pond Boss mag and forum, how it is dedicated to managing private waters, and what a great place it is to get help with fishery/water mgmt.
