I had the chance to take my fiancé, Lama, to the farm for a few days and was showing her around. While down at Bowen Pond, I noticed what I thought at the time was a big turtle on the other side of the pond, too far for me to see exactly what it was. It started moving fast when it noticed us, coming towards us a little to see what strangers had arrived. Then I thought maybe it was a beaver or otter. I still couldn't tell what it was so I took her to Snake Lake and showed her the rest of the land. On our way back we stopped again to see what kind of animal it was and while high on the banks over the pond (old mine), we saw it was a gator. It is between 4 and 5 feet long and acting like it owns the place. The next day we got in a little boat and paddled out (forgot the paddle so I actually used an oak branch which worked great) and got to within 75 feet before it would go under and resurface farther away. I'll tell you, that was the last thing I expected to see and what a great sight it was. It was Lama's first gator ever in the wild and it just happened to be on our land. How cool is that? I don't know how long it will stay but I would love to have it make itself a permanent home there. I'll post pictures once I'm back in Jordan.

I think it's nice you're engaged to a member of the clergy.

When they get big they become dangerous especially for kids and small animals (dogs). Careful what you wish for. We have lots in the oxbows (next to a river and just below a 33,000 acre lake). None in the ponds . If one shows up there it is history - to many small kids (cubs , brownies , ymca , church , boy and girl scouts , and family) and their furry friends. Way to much risk.

They really help thin out the turtles and bull frogs. Make the herons, egrets, and water turkeys nervous too! I think you leave him alone until he is ~7'. then take him out.

I had 3 show up from a local bayou across the gravel road from my home place and had to assist 2 of them in transitioning into the next life. My neighbor assisted the third.
