I can't wait to get my breeders from New York, probably in November. The owner of the fish farm says he has some really large pumpkinseeds for the region. Sounds promising.

Bill Cody is going with me to get some also, and wants to put some in a cage and do some research on them.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

To me that top one looks like it has a bit of RES in it.

The Pumpkin Seed has to be about the prettiest non-tropical fish I've seen.

I don't think their scales will glisten quite as brightly in my garden as the GSF scales though.......GSF scales with that 74 ford envy-a-real-fish-green have got some sparkle to them!

Wow Cecil, your coming all the way to NY for your PS's, better hurry up, our governor is raising the taxes and fees on just about everything.
I guess the cool weather should help their survival.

Shoot AP I can remember taxes and fees being high in your state when I was a kid riding through on the thruway in the family car to Indiana from Massachusetts. We could always count on sky high prices if we bought any food or gas at the pull offs.

One reason I won't get them until November is the supplier won't get his VHS inspection results until them. He has samples taken in October. I was hoping to get them this spring, but the 6 month period for the permit ran out and temps were still quite frigid. He still had snow on the ground (near Buffalo). I've been told by several suppliers not to handle or haul sunfish species in cold water. I've seen fish fungus up before from being handled in cold water (crappies), and it was almost a total loss. I don't want to repeat that.

Of course you do realize that you've probably ingested some GSF DNA. And just think right at this very moment it's inside you coursing through your veins and arteries..... plotting and planning....

Neither, it's Smith Creek Fish Farm near Buffalo ( Bliss, NY to be exact)

No doubt Bill will write one. I take pics of everything now. It's just a matter of getting off my lazy **** and doing articles. And to think I had to come up with one a week when I did a column. Maybe that's what ruined the fun for me. \:\(

I am certain the 4 I posted are PS . They were done by Wisc Fish (fisheries scientists positive id). They have pics and info on all aspects of every fish species in Wisc. from color to fins to gill rakers including various crosses. Great site. Take a look http://www.wiscfish.org/

That's an excellent link I have in my favorites Eric.

You what amazes me? Have you noticed some other state DNR websites have only poor illustrations for fish? You would think someone on the staff could go out and take pictures if they are worried about copywrite infringement.

I agree, it would be nice if each DNR or it's equivalent had a quality section on fish identification in their state with some quality photos. Virginia has the VT website which is very good. Some states are really lacking though...

I've got a teaser for everyone. We found some interesting results after 5 years of smallmouth bass and pumpkinseed in a sand/gravel pit. I'm saving the story for PBIII and then we'll get it to the magazine after that. Not to be a pain or anything, but don't I need at least one new thing to say at the conference??? \:\)

Yeah, I'm thinking I should have just kept quiet. Maybe a moderator needs to moderate me, Theo? \:\) I'm excited to have a new case history, though!

Yeah pretty please Dave! You can always PM us.

Hey maybe when I start producing them I can overnight ship them if any one wishes to purchase any.

Or I could hybridize them with the Bordello's and call them Bordello punkers? \:o

I do know there was a researcher at Illinois Natural History that was researching first generation pumpkinseeds X bluegills in Canada that got quite large.

Unless I market them like Ken Holyoke does green sunfish bluegill hybrids.

Actually I have no intention of hybridizing them. An attempt at a bit of humor there.

Agreed PS are colorful. Mine have grown some since the spring, the ones that have elauded the long-legged blue devil, and I have PS fry all over the pond from the spring spawn.

In my opinion the northeastern brook trout is most colorful fish that swims in fresh water. I only wish I could have a pond that could keep the water temp down where they need to be for trout.
