The trolling motor on my small boat all the sudden stopped working. IT will turn left and right slowly and not turn the prop at all. All connections are good and the battery is full. Why will it turn some but not full force, any ideas? One more question, do trolling motors have fuses??

Any help?
thanks Jake

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere to me. You should have a fuse or circut breaker on a trolling motor. Check wiring from battery to motor and make sure there is no corrosion or partially broken wires.

Good morning Dave, I've checked the ships systems, and everything appears to be running normally.

Have you tried removing the prop to see if anything is binding and keeping it from spinning freely?

Sounds like it has a bad wire if it gets only partial power and the battery is indeed fully charged and does not have a bad cell.

now it wont move at all, and the battery shows to be full. Is there any way to check the wires with out just re-wireing the whole thing?

Check to see if there is any fishing line wrapped inside the prop housing. I have had that happen before. Most trolling motors do not come standard with a fuse or circuit breaker. You have to wire that in. It is usually a circuit breaker. I have run trolling motors for a good many years and have never had the circuit break trip. For little fishing boats, I like to just use a prewired trolling motor battery box. The circuit break is prewired into it and it makes things a lot easier. It protects the bettery and has a battery power gauge built right into. Be careful, some brands are super cheap and will fall apart with little use. The one made by Minnkote has been very good.

jakeb, if you can't find any external problems take the control housing apart, you may have corrosion inside, a few years ago I had that problem with an old Minn Kota trolling motor.

Several have said what I would look for first, and that would be fishing line wrapped around the housing of your prop. The only way to see/find it is to remove your prop. (Disconnect the battery first, lol) Simply chore, easy fix - unless that's not it. I'd sho nuff start there.

Could be a bad conn at the brushes too.Sometimes they start leaking and get water inside the motor itself. Here we go,"trolling motors 101...for dummies"

thanks for the info guys, ill check into all ideas and try to report back. I dont think its fishing line because the pond its in has never been fished to have fishing line in/around it. Nonetheless if all else fails ill look it over.
