Yes, it's normal, but you are doing some negative reinforcement by forcing said Tilapia to smell your sandal before release.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

Thanks RC, I also thought that was one of my better one-liners of late.

I don't think there are many fish out there that wouldn't feed on the fry of other fish.

Scott, the tilapia in your pic appears to be a Mozambicus. A good choice for your area to assure they die each winter.

I catch them pretty regular on jigs...they seem to hit it out of curiosity

Yes, it's normal, but you are doing some negative reinforcement by forcing said Tilapia to smell your sandal before release. You you telling us tilapia have a shoe fetish? Gosh I keep learning more stuff about tilapia every day! There was a weird guy in my college dorm that had a sock fetish. My dastardly roommate told him my socks stunk. The guy sat down next to me at lunch one day and grilled me about my socks. I almost killed my roommate.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
