Yeah, she hooked into a grass carp that wore her out earlier. She didn't want to fish but wanted me to keep fishing. There was $1200 worth bass rods and the $20 Princess pole with the line that came on it did the job just fine.

I have no idea. I've been slacking on data collection. My produce scale is a 1/4 mile away in the barn with both of my golden rules.

I decided to get out and do some of my favorite laid back fishing this past evening. Tossing grass shrimp under a bobber for anything that'll bite. I took my boat out on the Potomac River. The ramp I launched from is at the end of the Reagan National Airport runway. Quite a sight having jets screaming over your head as you launch your boat. Anyways, I headed up river into the heart of Washington, DC waters. As usual, the grass shrimp didn't let me down and I caught a mixed bag of fish. Several redbreasted sunfish, a few bluegills, 1 small yellow perch, a couple largemouth bass, and three channel cats one of which was a hair over 6 pounds all caught on 2 pound test. 1 of the redbreasts A channel cat My dinky yellow perch One of my largemouths withe Lincoln and Washington Monuments in the background A bluegill with the monuments in the background A pretty sunset on the Potomac, who'd think the river could be so pretty in DC!

CJ I would say your catch represented the city population (temporary residents portion) well. A wide variety of aggressive big mouths who like to mooch free shrimp.

Did you live-line the perch? Nope, minimum size to keep YP is 9" in DC waters... Surprisingly the DC Police Dept's harbor patrol is very active in enforcing fish size and limit restrictions... I think it is because anyway they can make a buck!

The pic is hard for me to see on this puter but I sure would not want to put money on it being a GSF.

Definitely not a GSF. It's either a redbreast or a longear sunfish. Hard to tell from the coloring but the elongated opercule belongs to one of those two species.

DIED, or should we call him the poster formally known as DIED...
HAHA It's a redbreast, they are the most common sunfish in the Potomac River. There is a small introduced population of longears, but they are not very common except for a few smaller tributaries where they have taken hold better. GSF are in the Potomac as well, but they tend to not get very big and hold tight to rocky areas.

All those years as "DIED," and what now.

This guy lost his upper lip when I caught him last year, but has done well enough without it.

following the lipless bg, awlright, i'll be DANGED instead of DIED. sure looks slimlined like a GSF, w/ the emerald mouth streaks.....but the fins are the wrong color, and his mouth is a bit small......i humbly defer to you east coasters.....its been too long since i been back there.

For all UL panfishing addicts - check this great article: http://www.in-fisherman.com/content/ultralight-panfish/2I had one of these spinning rods made - 7.5' 1 wt fly rod blank - and use 1 lb fireline crystal and can launch jigs at light as 1/80 oz...it's quickly replacing my Loomis UL's as my favorite panfish stick...thought it deserved a recommendation especially when fishing overpressured waters and "tiny jigs presented on gossamer thread" is essential.
