WOW! That's is quite a neat coloration, the yellow in the dorsal and caudal fin is amazing!

I don't think that is a CSBG as Bruce's fish are northern BG and that one is a CNBG.

That fish came from one of the http://www.bigbluegill.com members. That is the standard coloration of the CNBG found in one of the California reservoirs. I'll see if I can find out specific location.

Bruce, don't check further, Calif imported pure Florida LMB and CNBG and now are beating all existing records for LMB raised on trout forage.
Thanx much ..

A beautiful speciman. Most of the larger ones around my feeder have very light colored tails and fins like that.(4 ft. visibility). I hope they will look anything like that, when sampled again 4 July with grandkids. I just may have to take a peek next weekend.

WOW !!!!!

Never seen a CNBG that looked like that. Info would be good. Unusual coloration on the tail and fin almost like some different gene combo lined up on its DNA. Could be related to a small sample of original fish. Thanks Bruce.

Bruce I looked at the "female" photo . Are you sure that is a female ( dark spot and makings of the copper bar) and not an immature male ?

mixed signals. All the copper around the head says male, but the ear tab at a 45 may mean female?? Colifornia?

I would call the CNBG "female" due to estimated size.
If width of index finger is ~0.5 inches, extrapolated length of fish is ~8.5+ inches and should demonstrate mature male characteristics?

ps: Mrs. G just looked at the photo and she agrees with Eric
She's caught as many or more than I and ID's all my CNBG for color and configuration.

Could the yellow fin tinting on this Coppernose be a result of something in it's diet? Every once in while I will catch a LMB with extremely unusual bright orange fin tinting. I have always thought that this might have been the result of an exclusive diet on crawdads over a long period of time. Maybe this California reservoir has a type of scud not commonly found elsewhere? The yellow fin tinting is either a unique genetic trait or the result of something in it's diet. I know that feeding krill to BG over a period of time can influence their coloration. Just thinking out loud, that is a cool looking Coppernose

Shorty, you may be right. Often crustacean rich diets do seem to give fish a much prettier color. When I used to keep a couple wild brown and tiger trout in an aquarium I fed them a good bit of krill. It really helped them maintain their pretty natural colors. A fishes coloration is not just genetics, but diet and water chemistry as well. The "black" bluegill recently posted by Mr. Lusk is proof of that.

Yes it could be food. Carotenoids in crustaceans does effect many species of fish and birds. Usually it is a red/pink to orange color enhancement. If so I wonder why on the fins/tail which are red/orange in some populations anyway are yellow instead?

Carotenoids of Different Types and Concentrations in

Commercial Formulated Fish Diets Affect Color and Its

Development in the Skin of the Red Oranda Variety of Goldfish

GEOFFREY K. WALLAT , ANDREW M. LAZUR , FRANK A. CHAPMAN

North American Journal of Aquaculture 67:42–51, 2005

The yellow, orange, and red hues found in fish
skin and flesh result from the deposition of pigments

classified as carotenoids (Simpson et al.

1981). Carotenoids are also vital nutrients for

healthy growth, metabolism, and reproduction.

However, carotenoids cannot be synthesized by

most animals, including fishes, and must be obtained

from dietary sources (Hata and Hata 1972a;

Torrissen et al. 1989; Storebakken and No 1992).

For example, several researchers confirmed that

the primary source of the pink to red coloration

in wild trout muscle tissue was due to the consumption

of crustaceans (Stevens 1947; Goodwin

1954; Fox 1957). The first studies on dietary supplementation

of pigments in cultured rainbow trout

Oncorhynchus mykiss used paprika, extracts from

crawfish, and petals from the marigold flower (Peterson

et al. 1966). Carotenoid pigment deposition

in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was greatly influenced

by individual size, weight, age, sexual ma

turity, and genetic factors (Torrissen and Naevdal

1988). Diets containing alfalfa meal, mysis-stage

shrimp, lutein, and astaxanthin were fed to colored

carp Cyprinus carpio, and the results indicated that

lutein intensified the red color in the skin and that

astaxanthin produced a brighter color than lutein

(Iwahashi and Haruo 1976).

The primary red pigment or carotenoid in the

skin of goldfish was identified as astaxanthin

(Simpson et al. 1981).

DIED, do you have access to CNBG? Just wondered, 'cause I couldn't remember if you'd considered them.
