I live in Baldwin County,Alabama(along the coast).I just doubled the size of my small pond to .42 acres and the water will not clear up.Does anyone know where I can purchase alum? I did the test and alum worked great but I used the alum that is purchased at the grocery store. Is it the same? It looks like I will need approx. 100 pounds.Everywhere that I have checked around here says they have never used alum. They say use hydrated lime only. Does it work as well as alum? At the local farmers supply, I was told to start with 250 lbs of lime in my .42 acre pond. thanks, Leo

We can get it for you. I do not keep in stock and I will have to check on current price and see about shipping rates. Hopefullly you can find it local. Hydrated lime alone might work but at 250 lbs in .42 ares you will more than likely have a fish kill. They warn folks using more than 50 lbs/acre. I like to combo 100 lbs alum with 50 lbs hydrated to buffer it.

Welcome to the forum Leo!!
Good thing you came cause the people telling you to use HYDRATED lime are wanting you to kill every fish you have!!!
250 lbs of HYDRATED lime will raise your ph to around 12 in 15-20 minutes and kill everything in it! AGRICULTURAL lime (Ag Lime) is safe though. 3-4 tons of it may clear your water.
How far away is the nearest city with a population over 50,000? You can call local chemical distributers to find alum at a good price.
If you cant find it, PM me or Greg.

Welcome Leo to PB. Do you know your alkalinity. Ag lime may work (not hydrated)and you may need ag lime anyway. You may want to take a look at this link. http://srac.tamu.edu/index.cfm?catid=25 and then see SRAC 0460 Control of Clay Turbidity in Ponds
