I have a question about keeping mosquitos away. I know several folks that hang clear ziplock bags with water in them around porches, back yard trees, etc. under the assumption that it will repel mosquitos. Does anyone know if that tactic really works, or is it a wives tale? If it does work, what is the science behind it?

If you want to repel mosquitoes, protect yourself with DEET. It works and is safe if used as directed.

"Bounce" dryer sheets in your pocket works pretty well.

Well..................ya can't have ALL upsides to every home remedy.

P.S. It helps to keep the wrinkles out of your T-shirt and the stain from setting in your shorts, while running from the bear.

Good or bad, I'm glad our local law enforcement didn't know about Bounce. I guess my bear that lives back-of-the-barn decided to go into town this past weekend to celebrate the holiday, or to visit a friend buried in the cemetery.

Bear Escorted Out of Town

Bear escorted out of town

From Star Staff Reports

WINCHESTER — Winchester Police spent part of Memorial Day Monday trying to escort a black bear out of town.

The bear, which was spotted walking around Mount Hebron Cemetery, eventually left town near Berryville Avenue before noon.

The first reported sighting of the bear came at about 7:30 a.m.

Winchester Police Sgt. J.B. Meredith said Monday evening that a Virginia game warden was contacted, but nothing could be done with the animal because he was not aggressive.

“He left the area, but we are unsure where he went,” Meredith said.

Winchester resident Kevin Lowery said he saw police officers trying to encourage the bear to leave Mount Hebron Cemetery on Monday morning.

“I was on my bicycle on Pleasant Valley Road, and I came down Woodstock Lane,” he said. “I saw Animal Control and another officer, and then the bear started going toward Pleasant Valley Road.

“He went off toward Cork Street.”

I have heard of dryer sheets, but not the ziploc trick. Check out this thread from last years discussion on mosquitos. GW recommends a product that I am going to use this year.

The mosquitoes are supposed to think the zip locks are spider webs. Don't know if it works, but it sounds plausible.

I used to get zillions in my garage. Now I have dozens of geckos(have no idea where they came from), and much fewer mosquitoes.

I heard the plastic bag water thing was for flies, which makes me think it won't work on anything.

We have geckos by the thousands, dozens in the house. The house geckos do keep the mosquito population to a minimum.

My neighbors either put up with them or burn a palm leaf upwind of where they are sitting, its free.

I use the coil that need to be lit, it works well and covers a large area. Long sleeves, long pants and socks are my repellent of choice.

One odd thing, or maybe that is, one more odd thing, is here the mosquitoes rarely bite my face or neck.

I have only heard of the plastic bag trick for house flies. Lots of BBQ joints I go to have them outside the door. The flies seem to be fascinated with their reflections. Those geckos came from the mediteranean area. We loved them in Houston. Once they showed up a lot of our bug problems went away, but not mosquitoes. What about one of those propane mosquito traps? I have borrowed one and it worked, but I don't know about long term control.

No bear wrangling for me... But I did wrangle about a 5' black snake out of some lady's kitchen pantry last Thursday night. She was standing on a chair screaming for me to come in when I got there. HAHA!

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Not sure about skeeters but we have Buffalo Gnats. When they bite it raises huge bumps that itch like crazy. A Pro fisherman friend recommended a mix of 1/2 imitation vanilla extract and 1/2 water. Mix it in a spray bottle and spray hat, arms, face, etc. It works and is cheap.

Not sure what it would do for bears though.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Probably about as well as bears can be reasoned with.

Those electrified "tennis rackets" work really well and it's pretty satisfying to watch the little pests explode when you hit 'em. the mosquitoes here are terrible and you really can't do much other than wear some "OFF!" spray, or as it's known up here "Canadian Cologne" \:\)
