I think the dark coloring and lack of clear chain patterning is an effect of the dark colored waters the fish is from. I see chain pickerel colored that way in several of the waters that are dark like Richmond Mill is. Northern pike also tend to have substantial patterning in their fins, this fish doesn't... Plus, I would be highly surprised a northern pike would be stocked into a Piedmont impoundment in southern NC. Anything is possible though. I have never seen a chain pickerelxnorthern pike hybrid so I can't say what one would look like.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Cj thanks I had no idea there was a seperate species called a roach or rudd for that matter. Very interesting. I feel pretty strongly though that term got started years ago and it is fun for a country boy to call a fish a roach. They all appeared no diff thatn other GSH I have seen in many other parts of the SE.
Embrassed to say I did not then to key out "sucker" species. I believe in most all my cases I'm dealing with lake chubsuckers. However I also know I have seen both and just did not know at the time how to tell them apart. I have followed the thread on the chubsuckers and hope to properly id in the future.
Hopefully Bob will remember and tell you which Richmond Mill has.

The rudd was sold in the bait stores in South Dakota as "hybrid golden shiner" about 15 years ago. They were hardy, and survived well as tip-up baits for northern pike ice fishing. Many people release their bait, of course, when done fishing. We now have the European rudd well-established in quite a few SD water bodies.

Dave, have you seen any sign of them hybridizing with the GSH?

No reports of hybridization. That may be because we don't have golden shiners in many of the natural lakes that now support rudd? Not much overlap. Most of our golden shiners are in the small impoundments in the central and western part of the state.

Bob are you going to leave us in suspense or are you going to post the correct species?

1) Bluespotted sunfish 2) Warmouth 3) Black banded sunfish (that's a full grown adult) 4) Baby chain pickerel 5) Hybrid (I'm pretty sure it's a cross between redear and a flier) 6) Yellow perch. (They call it 'raccoon perch' here) 7) Same fish as 5 8) Chain pickerel adult 9) Roach or Rudd...I might be corrected on this, but I am pretty sure this 11 inch monster is a roach. 10) Coppernose bluegill and Debbie Lusk what bob said.... cool thread...
