There is no absolute answer. Your pond, according to Lusk, should be able to hold about 100 pounds of predators per acre. You may already be there.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I guess the bass if they all survived are approaching 3/4 lb..catfish I have been catching are around 1.25 lbs..so I am over 100lbs of predators...if they all survived that is..I was planning on harvesting around 30-40lbs of cc this year..

I would have to concur with Dave's answer.

Having been through an over abundance of really large and troublesome catfish, I would caution anyone about adding many more than will be taken out annually. We typically remove 15-20 that are 18-22 inches. I find that annually adding 20-25 catfish, that are 10-14 inches, is just about right for my 0.8 acre pond, and for the way we harvest the fish. I don't know what happens to the other catfish, I assume they have died a natural death, or else they are lurking in the depths getting fatter and fatter.

Good luck,
Ken

I have heard of problems with too many and too big CC..I plan on harvesting about 25 a year...So I'll keep up the total between 50-75 CC at any one time in the pond...thanks for your input..

At that stocking and management rate, I think you have a good chance of having a disaster. Fifty 2 pound CC will possibly blow the lid off the predator/prey relationship. And then, you have to consider oxygen demand with the possibility of limited rainfall.

Jeff, another big factor is if you are going to be feeding your CC and if you have aeration. One or both and you'll be able to support a substantially larger number of CC in your pond.

Thanks for the input..I considered aeration but that will have to wait till next year..I will plan on taking out 30 or so of the larger CC...Definitely do not want a fish kill.
