We have been bustin' hump to try to develop our pond project, so when a reward arrives, we try and make time to take it in. Sometimes those rewards are pretty danged basic and might mean zip to someone other than a PM.
Spring in the midwest is a wet one this year. Friday was another blast and we calc'd 2.5 - 3" of rain over a few hours at the pond. We just so happened to have a visit scheduled the following morning on Saturday. When we arrived, the water level was higher than I have seen it, but not out of control. Some spec's: 5 surface acres, 60 ac drainage, 18" x 120' long spillway pipe.
When we started planning excavation some 4 years ago, I wondered if 60 ac of drainage would be sufficient. My dirt guy, well versed in pond construction, asssured me that it would be fine and actually be a blessing in a major rain event. I'm a believer now.
Anyway....
When we arrived, the level was up about 8" over normal pool. On 5 ac, that's alot of water in my little world. As we walked the road around the perimeter, enjoying the blissful silence that is constantly broken by the multitude of birds singing and calling, we heard a new sound as we approached the dam area. It was kinda cool. Yup, the simple things in a Pondmeister's life...

And that's only 8" of water into an 18" spillpipe! Imagine when it's really high.

I don't think I've seen the drain guard since it was painted.

Fun videos. The second one didn't do anything, but the first and third videos played for me and I enjoyed seeing them. It looks like you did a really good job with the sizing of your pipe and the use of rock to stop erosion. It looks great.

It's not how many ideas you have, but how many you make happen.

3/4 and 4 acre ponds.
