I thought I would share with you the fact that one of my friends just raised a double digit bass out of a pond that can't be more than an acre and may be less. If any of you are interested in details let me know and I will find out what I can.

Absolutely, I think the little survey in the PB mag said something like 1/3 of all Pond Boss subscribers own ponds smaller than an acre, so there are sure to be other highly interested folks out there as well!

Post the story. Post photos. Post a pond map. Indicate the size, shape, color and species of forage base. Aeration or no. Vegetation should be listed alphabetically by common name. Details man, we need the details.
Oh and get the pond owner posting here. Tell him it's his civic duty.
You bet we want to hear about it!
It just occurred to me that this could be the proverbial big fish in a little pond we've heard so much about.

James,
You have my attention. I'll second JHAP and say that you should get the pond owner to to join the forum.

I would be interested in the overall pond situation.

I would be interested in the overall pond situation. I don't know why Eric, but this strikes me as exceptionally funny. You are a master of the understatement. I suspect that had you been a passenger aboard the Titanic, in the midst of all of the noise and confusion you would have simply stated: "I would be interested in the life boat situation."

Jeff what would you say is the single most important principal or thought you have learned here? When you reply then I will post mine and why. Is that understated ?

Sorry I took so long getting back on this subject but I kept playing phone tag with the pond owner. He is a dentist in Paris Texas.the pond is actually over two acres and was originally stocked by a biologist he knew named Bob Lusk. The actual size of the bass was 9.6lbs and 25 inches. He said the pond was stocked from fish from Arkansas ten years ago and only had bass and copper nose bluegill. He said that equal numbers of florida and northern bass were stocked and didn't know which strain the bass was. He said the biggest regret he had was in not removing enough bass sooner and causing the bass to become stunted. He felt that the bass would have weighed more if he had.

Thanks James. That big LMB has been doing well probably eating BG and small stunted LMB. I am not so sure that LMB would have done better without all those stunted 10 inch LMB to feast on. It was one that got over the log jam of small LMB and keep on growing. It might even be one of the original Fla LMB now feasting on its offspring.
JHAP you now see why I ask the question about unintended consequence from an unsustainable situation.

ewest, I agree, I am also blessed with year around growth periods, so the two factors combined compress the time required to raise a few really big fish in a small pond.

Rad that is so true wrt extended growth periods at optimum feeding and growth temps. especially if food is plentiful and reproduction limited.

JHAP you now see why I ask the question about unintended consequence from an unsustainable situation. Yes sir I do. Further proof that you can teach an old bean counter new tricks.

So far we don't have any rules against dentists join in. Thanks for posting this thread James. You peaked our interest and provided us (or at least me) with a learning experience.
