The house I rent has a gas heater but everything else is electric. My roommates and I are thinking about shutting of the gas and buying some space heaters to heat the living room and kitchen over the winter.

We spend 90% of the time in our rooms and use space heater in them. We kept the thermostat for the rest of the house set at 60 degrees. When I am home by myself I would turn the heater off in the house and just use a space heater in my room. The gas bill averaged around $130 over the entire winter.

I would like to get some opinions on if this would be a good thing to do.

A 1500 watt space heater running 24/7 will average about $125 per month. Gas is still far less expensive to use for heat and less maint. Is there insulation? outside doors opened often from friends coming and going? These two factors can raise a bill rapidly.

Rainman is right on. If you have natural gas, it is the way to go, especially if all are using individual elec. heaters in their rooms. If one guy likes it warmer, then he can use an extra heater on low cycle.
Just think, natural gas is one of the fuels used to fire boilers to run turbines, so there has to be drop in efficiency of electric over gas. This is especially true in heating, as the heating elements are virtually a short circuit across the electrical line. More than I intended to say.

+1 Natural Gas is cheaper than electric, unless you got something worked out with the electric company.....

Now Chris us northerners could go around in our shorts all winter down there.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Sixty degrees? You could grow indoor icicles at that temp. Like these guys say, individual electric space heaters are more expensive.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Often a major concern with electric space heaters.
