I am planning on stocking my pond with smallmouth bass, to my knowledge they like gravelly bottom and spawn in gravel, so is it possible to raise them in a mud bottom pond, or should i have a portion of it gravel bottomed?

You should be able to get by with gravel in spawning beds for them. See the Archive thread.

Turtis, Bill Cody one of the more knowledgeable posters on here and authors in the Pond Boss Magazine is doing a series of articles on Smallmouth bass right now in the magazine starting with the recent issue. If you haven't subscribed yet, you may want to consider. Some great information in there that I think will really help you along if you are planning on raising smallies...

The May-June 2009 (delivery at end of April) issue of Pond Boss magazine has a very informative article about SMB spawning sites, the best types of nesting substrates for them and how to build nest sites for SMB. The nest site ideas are also very good nesting sites for largemouth and spotted bass.
