My neighbor, who use to work for a road construction company, has offered me a bunch of road pillars. These are the pillars that they use on guard rails/highway barriers. Each are about 4-5ft tall and probably 8 inches in diameter. I am thinking about taking some of these and creating and artifical stump patch etc... How many would I need to bury to be effective? What pattern, ie row, offset, star pattern, etc..? If I buried them 12-18 inches that would leave 3-3.5 feet sticking out of the ground. These things are heavy and treated so they should last a long time.

An interesting idea no doubt... I think how you lay them out is entirely up to you. Closer together would probably be better IMO.

Do you know what kind of treatment they have, Brandon? Some kinds you might not want in your pond.

Theo,

I thought the same thing about the treatment. After followup with my neighbor and another friend in the road construction business, they both confirmed due to EPA laws etc...any material used near any water way according to TX laws has to be eviromentaly friendly. That includes potenial run off and aquifers as well. Both assured me that these meet state spec. Living 45 miles from Austin in the most PETA friendly area, short of San Fransico, these are good.

My thought is if they are used already, the weather would have leached the majority of any nasties out of the pillars already. Good to hear that they are safe from the get go. The distance apart might be dependant on what size of fish you expect to make use of the habitat.

essup,

Primarily LMB habitat. My buddy has given me free use of their 30 acre lake. Due to the low water I wanted do my part in helping create a better fishery. The lake has ample shoreline structure but not much beyond that. The lake was built many years ago for flood control, not fishing.

That is good to know, Brandon.

Well, yes, assuming they were in a part of Texas that gets rain. ;\)

It's something we have here in Ohio. It's like being in the shower, only outside. \:D

O.K. Theo, lets see you explain the term "snow".

Yeah what is snow? A few years ago we got about a 1/2 inch of snow. My poor dog was scared to death. Would not walk on it. Good thing it melted away pretty quick.
