We had a thuderstorm blow through here last evening. I heard a snap and there she was on the ground. I ran out in the driving rain and rescued her. Needless to say, I will be fabricating up a heavy duty steel replacement mount.

Temporary placement:

Make sure if you fly them at night you have a light shining on them...

Section 6a: "It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness."

The Flag Code offers no additional guidance on this question. We interpret this to mean that there should be either a light directly upon the flag or that there be sufficient local lighting to make the flag easily visible at night.

If you cannot "properly illuminate" your flag, we recommend that you retire it at sunset, as the Flag Rules specify.

The American Legion defines proper illumination as a "light specifically placed to illuminate the flag (preferred) or having a light source sufficient to illuminate the flag so it is recognizable as such by the casual observer."

I fly my flag 24 hours a day. It is automatically illuminated from dust until dawn with Metal Halide Flood lights.

Flood lights bouncing off beer cans can be blinding.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave, Please tell the story that this statement is based upon. We all like a good beer story!

I figured you would be the one who could tell that story.

My flag has flown 24/7 since 9/11 and will continue to be displayed and well lit until our country is again secure and at peace.

Haven't flown mine yet in 2009. May only fly it on July 4th, Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day for a while.

I take mine down during the winter as it is dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home (no light on it). Pretty soon the sun will be up before I leave and I will be back to putting my flag up before I leave and taking it down at sunset. I could put a light on it but I kind of like the routine. Reminds me of watching them raise/lower the flag on military bases

Although we may fly different flags I can definitely appreciate the patriotic feeling of raising a flag. Americans definitely seem to do this with more vigor than up here but it's something that I have a lot of respect for. Now if I can only get the american cottage owners to atleast fly a Canadian flag along with their US ones there wouldn't be a problem...hahaha

Our subdivision made the paper for flying our flags. An elderly man bought 100 "dollar" flags and placed 2 in front of as many homes on both sides of the road on flag day '08 at the entrance to our subdivision. That day, everyone was VERY pleased at this sight so we took up a flag money collection. It quickly grew and on Memorial Day last year ALL 800+ homes in the sub had at least 2 flags, many had more lining the street. 25 Volunteers put them up at sunrise and remove them at sunset each day for two days before and two days after each National holiday now. Adjoining subdivisions are joining us now. MANY area young children are now PROUD here now to help honor our country and the sacrifices of our military from these flags represent and joyfully help put them out and bring them in.

That is great Rainman, what a fantastic community event. I may have to rethink where you are on the GSA Scheduled Termination Calendar.

Nice work as usual Dwight.

Dwight, now THAT is a proper flag mount. Rainman I bet that's quite a sight to see! Even more important is that you said the kids are getting right into it. Every generation needs to understand the efforts and sacrifices that were made by the previous ones to enjoy what we all have today.
