The lone coot showed up on the pond this week. He/she's been spending the Spring here for the last five years or so. Just sticks to himself and swims around all day. Stays for a month or two, then he's gone. He's a cool old coot. I'm going to be like that when I get old. No one will be able to stand me and I'll just hang around the pond. 
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I had two new visitors to the drained pond this morning. A couple of turkey buzzards cleaning up the dead fish (very small gills and fatheads that got stranded when I drained it down.)
George I don't consider you an "old coot." You're too nice a guy. The guys I know of as old coots are cranky!

We get alot of Coots here in the summer. They nest in the cattails. I think they are the scum of the earth.

Coots are the GSF of the duck world. We always called them mud hens.

We call them mud hens too. I don't think I have ever seen one fly more then six inches off of the water. I think they walk south in the fall or maybe just bury themselves in the mud for the winter.

I have a single coot in my pond too. I rarely see it, except when I'm on the tractor mowing, or from a distance. My experience with coots is from duck hunting in California where they were in big groups of several dozer to maybe a hundred of them. I liked to use coot decoys to bring in pairs of green heads, but never cared to shoot any coots. Everyone said they taste like mud and even though you could shoot 25 a day, nobody ever did.
I like this one and was hoping for more. I don't know why they would be bad for a pond. Is there a particular reason to not want them? I'm hoping that they will act as attractors for other duck species. One of the side effects that I didn't anticipate when digging my pond, was that the steep shore would eliminate a food source for the ducks. No plants, no food and no reason for ducks to visit my pond. Except for the wood ducks and the lone coot, we don't see anything else on it.

Hey eddie, I have the same question about Coots, we don't get them here and wondered if they cause a particular problem.
The Wood ducks and Mallards seem to love the plants and insects around the floating Islands, maybe if you built a couple of them it would attract more ducks.

As far as ponds go I don't see a problem with having a couple of coots.
Cecil, yes they were also made by our maker and I do respect living things. I just think he forgot to finish the coot or he just made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. I love Duck hunting like Eddie but would no waste a shell on a coot.
IMHO Not everything was made just for me though.
