So the pumpkinseeds are into nose piercing too? Nice close up!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Bruce, I am going to post that picture of the natural HBG from our old pond to compare the ear tabs on a HBG and a PS. I originally thought this HBG was a PS.

My bad I don't know much about the piercing and don't want to! It's all about the tattoo's with you, isn't it, Cecil?

IMO Pseeds are the most striking panfish...I'm still trying to figure out a way to fit them into my management plans.
Golden Trout or a Westslope Cuttroat taking all time first/second place for sheer beauty. No tats - no piercings.

I gotta go with truly wild male brook trout in spawning colors or the very rare wild tiger trout in spawning colors. Male PS are very pretty when spawning, as are longear sunfish.

Here's a wild 9" brook trout. Not quite spawning colors, but getting there...

Here's a wild 9" brook trout. Not quite spawning colors, but getting there... They are gorgeous...nothing like taking a few 9-10"ers from a Montana meadow stream on my 3wt - maybe a PMD or Wulff dry, and sliding them into the pan.

It does look it... But I am not 100% sure. The over sized opercle, no red or orange on it and the over all coloration leads me to believe it is.

I'd say it's a virtual certainty that is a BG X PS. They're actually quite common.
Interestingly, it seems that when bluegill cross with other lepomids, that the bluegill seem to dominate the overall body morphology, while the other sunfish contributes much of the coloration.
I might just be imagining that.

I know some families like that. Everyone in the family looks like a carbon copy of the dad or the mom but not both.

Bruce, I agree with your observations as well. Seems the hybrids take the shape of the BG but the color of the other species... Particularly the BGxGSF, BGxRES and BGxPS. The one that doesn't seem to match up quite as well is the BGxRBS cross:

Perhaps there is more variation than that, but the BG-morphed hybrids thrive the best. I AM pretty sure looking like a big BG is the best way to get noticed by Bruce.

I am out so I can't really go in to detail right now. Look at this thread and you will see that there are 2 HBG types (mBG X fGSF and the reciprocal cross). they look different. One has the morphology of the GSF and one the BG. HBG pic/question - http://www.pondboss.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=1341&Number=14459#Post14459I think we notice the pretty colorful ones and not the other. Dave Willis tells a story of them sampling when he picked up a good looking BG to show the students and to his surprise it was a HBG (gill rakers).

I think it would be interesting to document the many different sunfish hybrid combinations. Even the different between male or female parentage for each individual species... Wild caught fish might be harder to document which species the father or mother was, but cultured hybrids this could be done.
Eric are you aware of any kind of documentation like this? Photographic of the displayed phenotype in hybrids?
