I have a one acre shallow pond in Orange County, NY (depth varies 20"-60")w/ a slow moving seasonally active inlet and spillway. Big problem: wall-to-wall duck weed from June to November. I have a aeration compressor running continuously that did little more than create two 3' holes in the sea of green, and the NYSDEC regs seem to prohibit any effective chemical treatment. Is there any solution other than dredging?

Welcome harrypharr, glad to have another NYer. Experts should give you info tonight.
My thoughts are the shallow water adding to the problem allowing the water to warm quickly. I think Tilapia might help your problem, but you would have to stock them each year as the cold would kill them, lets see what everyone has to say.

Tilapia will definitely go to town on the duckweed... The two big questions are: Are they legal to stock in NY and can you find a source to buy them in NY?

The Suny college of Agriculture in Morrisville NY has them among many other types of fish. I plan on getting more Tiger Trout from them and maybe some HSB.
I haven't checked officially, but I can't find anything saying their illegal, and being a cop you know nothing is illegal if you don't get caught. \:D
But seriously I've seen articles were they're raising them in the Bronx, which I think is still part of N.Y.

You mean Zoo York?

Would HSB survive in your high acidity waters?

I'll let you know this summer.
Bass are suppose to be reasonably tolerant of acidic water according to the chart I have, but it doesn't show HSB.

As I recall, stripers are intolerant of acidic waters. Not sure about white bass as I have little experience with them. Acidic waters really effect striper's egg hatching causing deformations that lead to death. I think this is partly do to pollutants being more of an effect in acidic waters.

From what I understand, most fish that like salty environments, such as stripers tend not to do so well in acidic waters. Then again, brook and brown trout can both be sea run and will handle acidity, so I guess that theory isn't perfect...

There is some good info at these links...

Aquaculture of HSB Link
FWC HSB Link

If the HSB do well in your pond I'd love to hear.

CJ, thanks for the info, I also found some info by the southern regional aquaculture center that mention HSB surviving repeated exposure to a PH of 2.5 for short periods of time.
When I call the hatchery I'll ask them too, if they don't know maybe I'll try a small number in the cage I'm building, it's gonna have 2 sections, one for PS,s.

I keep expecting this thread title to have stock market info.

I guess stocking info is more appropriate.

HAHA I thought the same thing to first time I read it!

What size HSB will you be getting?

That SUNY Cobleskill has some interesting fish for sale... Arctic char and kokanee salmon to name a couple! Now brook trout need cold water, but seriously how cold must the water be for arctic char!

Arctic Char would feel right at home in my pond now, it's still froze. When I check with SUNY Morrisville I'll find out what they have, but can't do anything for 3 or 4 weeks.

Theo, It's too depressing to look at the stock market, I haven't checked my IRA in almost a month.
What is your opinion on the duck weed Problem?

It was the Duckweed, in the Pond, with the Prickly Rope.

There are no problems that the proper application of the Tom G cure can't fix. Of course, you would want to make sure the explosion didn't blow the duckweed into another nearby pond that didn't have any DW.

Will New York allow you to plant Kokanee or Arctic char in ponds? They are not allowed in Indiana or Michigan. I don't think you could raise them indoors either. I knew a guy that got some Arctic Char in Michigan and was growing them indoors. The MDNR made him destroy them.

One thing I can't figure out about New York. They require testing for all pathogens for all species even if they don't effect those species. Makes no sense to me.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

NY has been touchy about carriers ever since Typhoid Mary.

Cecil, there are 3 or 4 hatcheries that sell arctic char in NY, and the state stocks Bug Lake with Kokanee Salmon, it's about 10 miles from my cabin , and you have to hike a couple miles in to get there, it also has Lake Trout and Brook Trout.

Sounds like an interesting fishery... I like long hikes to fish, means less idiots to bother you.

That's why I like it up here, half of the land is designated forever wild, and my land is bordered by it.
I'm not anti social (My wife might disagree),but too many people can really screw things up. \:D
