The Pumkinseed is the most colorful of all the species IMO. BTW the fish was weighed on certified scales and was just shy of 1 pound! It qualified for a Michigan master angler award.

A 1 pound pumpkinseed is a monster. Wow!

I agree with you on color. I think it's up there with a male brook trout in spawning colors. Even David Thoreau was mesmerized by them.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I think the breeding male northern longear sunfish might give the pumpkinseed a run for it's money, but both species are quite gorgeous! I think the prettiest fish I have ever seen was a wild male tiger trout in breeding colors. I wish I would have taken a picture of him.

Yes CJ, I have never seen a natural tiger, except for photos.
of course many areas stock them.

A redbreast aint too shabby. I wish I had gotten some when Todd Overton had some a while back; but the pond was still dry.

You're right a longear is pretty impressive too. I don't know why you guys go all google eyed over the tigers though. I think a male brook trout in spawning colors puts them to shame.

Male brookies are beautiful, but I think the fascination with the tigers is cause you don't see many.
Maybe we shouldn't leave out GSF, lest we get grilled.

I think a lot of times the tiger trout gets left out because there are so few true wild ones, and only wild ones show their true colors. Plus, as adirondack said, there just aren't many of them. Hatchery fish are pretty, but the wild ones I have seen... WOW! I don't know, I have seen some really cool looking almost all black GSF. Not exactly gorgeous, but definitely cool looking.

This is after he sat in ice for 3 days, It was sooo much more colorful when first caught. This is the only pic I could find of him pre re-animated

Here's how he's looked for the last 9 years.  Most people that see it on the wall say "I've caught bigger Bluegill than that". I tell them it's not a bluegill it's a Pumkinseed. Everytime, I get a look from them like I'm crazy. At least it's only been called a Perch once!

That's one fat little bugger, looks like a dish plate with fins.
Did it have the red on the opercle flap, I couldn't see it in the photo?

If memory serves, It had just a little red around the edge. We was po' folk back then, and used a disposable camera on that shot. Those pics don't do it much justice at all. The thing is, most people think a bluegill is a bluegill. They all seem to get bunched into one basket. (or a perch is a perch) Putting a punkinseed against a hybrid or (true) Bluegill aint a fair fight!

Mobetter,

If you want it stripped down and painted like a pumpkinseed I'd be glad to do it. Looks like some fin repair is in order too. Let me know if you're interested.

The taxidermist didn't make it anatomically like it was originally either. (Should have been more round) Not much can be done about that though.

Not badmouthing him. Just an observation.

Thanks Cecil,

I will save my pennys for a touch-up. Like was said, the fish was in a frost free deep freeze better than 2 years. I'm sure my wonderful Wife had no clue to tell him what species it was. The Taxidermist who did it is very highly regarded around here for his deer mounts. He seems to be booked year round.

I'm wondering what kind of offspring would result from a BG x CBG cross. Big and cold tolerant, with only one copper nostril?

My distant cousin had a quick brain and an ugly mug while his wife had been a beauty queen but couldn't count to 11 without wearing sandals and that resulted in my ne'er-do-well cousin Bucky... but I digress.

Yes we do and on rare occasions and quite by accident I might add, they have something to do with ponds and fish and such.

That's the Problem Keg, the good genes are not necessarily the dominant genes.
