I want to build a pond that would be about 1-1/2 acres. The problem I have is that it's next to a public road and the lower end would be the dam. I can't build up a dam because it would overflow onto the road. The land slopes about 20 feet over 300 feet, so I'd have to dig out the upper end 20 feet just to get level with the would be dam. Getting the picture? There's several underground streams that on this property are the beginnings of a stream. Another 600 feet down the road is a good steady stream, even in drought conditions. I believe I have the near perfect place for a pond but the sloping land is giving me a headache. Any suggestions, or is this to much to be asking? Thanks, Jon

Hi Jon,
Welcome to the forum, I'm sure someone with experience will try to answer your question. Until then I have a few questions.
Couldn't you move the dam a little upstream, away from the road?
Is there a culvert going under the road now?
I'm guessing you would have to get a permit to build the pond so you may need some engineering anyway which might provide some answers.
Can you post a photo?

Welcome Jon!
Cutting into an underground stream (spring) could be a big problem. Springs are often the source and the drain in ponds and also where athe water level will remain at.
Like GW asked, can you post a photo? They are always a big help (plus we often drool over others places)

Hey guys. Thanks for the Welcome! I'm new here, as you can see, but I'll post pictures.(when I find where & how to post them) The stream on my land runs parallel to the road, and, yes, on down the road, is a culvert going under the road. That's a problem, I know. I've already printed out the permits, as this may be a watershed. Actually not sure if I can build a pond here, legally. However, I'm in a county in Georgia where they let things "go". But on the other hand, I can't afford a 10K fine! Be back in a cpl. days with pics. Thanks, Jon

Jon, heres a link to posting pics on the forum. http://www.pondboss.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=92443#Post92443Again Talk to the NRCS agent for your county and he can advise you on permits that may be needed, suggest builders, take core samples, decide the best dam site, and even supervise the construction, again all for free.

Jon, I'm also in a Georgia county that is usually fairly permissive, but things are tightening up as Florida fights for it's share of water from GA and AL. If you can't afford the fine I wouldn't build the pond, especially because it's in plain view of the road.

Hmmm...
Florida vs. Alabama and Florida vs. Georgia. Good rivalries.
