bobad, your right that most people are acting on instinct, but we were told to get our ass's off the chopper as fast as possible, and not slow down by crouching over, I guess training was different depending on the DI's. ( Huey blade height 14 ft. )

Chinooks are way higher, but you still duck to avoid the debris.

Our birds usually didn't even land in hot zones. We had to jump out up to 6' with an 80lb rucksack while the bird was hovering. I never knew of a single knee or ankle injury from that. Amazing!

Those chinooks were really big birds, I never got to ride in one.
I heard that they had alot of problems with their transmissions, which caused crashes.

I'm glad I didn't know that!

I can tell you the shafts and gearboxes whined loudly, and I didn't feel good about them. I spent a good amount of flying time watching them and worrying about them. I guess it didn't take an expert to sense they were on the edge.

AP,

There must be some smaller choppers that are dangerous as my dad said he watched a SV solider get hacked up by a blade by walking into it. [/quote]

Cecil, maybe Dad say one of those flying VCs as he made his approach after being tossed out of a helicopter.

Just do it...

BurgerMan, I thought I was the only one with a sadistic Wife that mumbles. She talks to me from another room and expects me to either understand her or come see what she wants. I no longer do that and haven't missed out on any emergencies. Or, at least I haven't heard about missing out on anything.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

No he watched SV regulat walk right into it. I'll have to get more details. Maybe it wasn't the top blade?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

My dad's headed to Florida now but I may have this wrong. It may have been an airplane prop. I'll find out if anyone is interested.

Most choppers I have been on, which are many, can decapitate you if you walk in front of the helo.

Bobad, ditto on the turbine sounds in the head. It's about time for a white noise generator to sleep by.
