On our way back from Texas cruising up I35 with the hammer down, I was wondering if an Armadillo would make a nice pet. Does anyone have experience with this? They are really cute, though not much for petting, I suppose.

I see several of them dead on the roadside clutching a beer can. They obviously have a drinking problem.

They ain't very smart. Even if you miss them with your tires, they jump when they get scared. They'll actually jump up when your vehicle goes over them...not pretty.

One time, at deer camp, my dad caught one and we put it in the truck (yes, the cab). Back at the cabin, I pulled it out from under the seat (when they set their claws, they're tough to move). My dad curled it up and held it behind his back. When we went in the house, he tossed it on my cousin's lap. I don't know who was more surprised to be in that predicament--the armadillo or my cousin screaming like a girl.

I have a couple of Armadillos that may get some lead poisoning if they don't leave my yard alone. I have treated the lawn for grubs, but that does not stop them from digging the place up. I will have to set my alarm, because they visit after 11PM and before 6AM.

When I was a kid, we used to sneak up on them and poke them in the hindquarters with a stick or finger. About half the time, they did a perfect backflip.

This is Toby, our pet Armadillo. He sleeps in the house & is trained to use a catbox. You can put a leash on him & go walking. He likes to play catch with small stuffed toys.

they make good chili mixed with coon, possum and a little venison. buzzards wont touch 'em.

The Opossum is the only Marsupial living in the USA. I don't recommend eating them. Even as roadkill the babies in their pouch will haunt you for the rest of your life.

Dwight, the babies are best deep fried.........Is an occasional touch of indigestion afterward considered a haunt?

Speaking from experiance two years ago during deer season, a soft tipped, 180 grain, 30.06 slug fired at 20 feet with a trajectory from nose to tail leaves a totally empty armadillo shell.

Once when pheasant hunting with a 12 gauge a red-winged black bird was in the line of the pheasant blast. Poof! Once being the operative word.

My first time ever rabbit hunting, I shot a cottontail at 12 feet with a 12 gauge. The shot was a little right of center, and there was enough left to fry a couple of pieces of rabbit.

What did you think about the guy that was "target practicing" with his 50 CAL toy and shot the lady inside her trailer at the Texas Speedway.................5 miles away? It happened in Dallas this last weekend.

I was about 6 and stalked a rabbit into some bushes and from about 10 feet away, I took very careful aim at dead center with my .410. I must have sat there for 10 minutes wondering whether or not to take both the head and tail to show my dad, neither, or tell him I missed.

I took both, and after he could breath again from laughing so hard, he told me about the importance of a "head shot" at such close range.

We, rather I, got to eat what little back leg was left!

Rainman: Great story. Very funny. It reminds me of the first rabbit I shot while hunting with my father. I had a very old iron sights falling block single shot .22 and we scared up a rabbit about thirty yards in front of us. I aimed at him while he was on a dead run quartering away from us, and with an extremely lucky shot, killed him with a head shot. Pop was very impressed until later that day we did some target practice and I couldn't hit a tin can from 10 yards. I was about 10 years old at the time.

Rainman's story reminds me of one of my first gun safety lessons.

I tagged along on a deer hunting trip with my dad when I was just a little 'ol squirt. I knew general gun safety already, but I had never dealt with high-powered deer rifles. I was a .410 and pellet gun type of guy. Sensing I did not understand the gravity of the situation, my dad took dead aim at a jackrabbit about 50 yards away with his .270.

After the shot, he told me to go get it. I thought the joke was on him, because I didn't know which part of the rabbit to pick up. Lesson accomplished.
