My question is will Tilipia eat down Hydrilla? If so then any suppliers in central Texas. Thinking of trying some next spring. How much is needed and what sizes for a 1 acre bass and coppernose pond?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I do not believe they will eat Hydrilla. I tried them this year and they were great on dispatching filamentious algae. Their benefit as "seasonal" forage may be their best assest.

Todd Overton, on IH45 between Buffalo & Centerville carries Tilapia and is good to work with.

Hydrilla is uncommon in private ponds, but often confused with coontail or other submerged species. If you truly have hydrilla, stock grass carp at a rate of 3-4 fish per acre or use a registered aquatic herbicide.

Tilapia won't control hydrilla, but would be good to stock if you use a herbicide, to help clean up the mess.

It's ALL about the fish!

It may not be hydrilla but extremely identical. so probably is. My fish stock guy has grass carp, but i am worried they will reproduce, thinking of may be just one. Or is it possible to get sterile carps. I only have 1 acre, any suggestions.

broncofan,

The grass carp for sale in Texas are all sterile...at least that is the law in our State. You do need a permit from TP&W to purchase them, however.

I just picked up a dozen of them from Todd Overton, who posted above, to restock my ponds. He's got some really good sized ones now which you don't have to worry about your LMB eating.

Triploid grass carp are what is sold in TX. They are sterile and require a permit procedure thru Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. Here is a link with some info: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/water/habitats/private_water/gcarp.phtml
