The Lazy W pond is down 10 or 12 feet with no rain in the near forecast. I don't believe in can last more than a couple more months without any noticeable rain. A couple of questions. First, I have stopped feeding as not to add to the bio load in the pond. Second, does anyone have experience with what occurs when a pond starts to belly up. What things happen first that would be an indicator that the end is near? When the end is near, is there time to seine some of the fish before they all die?

Are you actively taking any fish out already?

I have not been taking many fish out due to other projects, but probably should start soon. Which fish should go first? I have some nice size CC and LMB.

Are you eating or relocating the fish?
Sorry to hear about this heybud.

You have my sympathy as well, heybud. It's a situation none of us want to be in, but which most of us could be in some day given the wrong stretch of weather.
The largest fish in each species will be using the most oxygen, fouling the reduced amount of water the most, and likely will be the first to expire when conditions become borderline for life. I suppose it would make the most sense to start removing the largest specimens from each species, concentrating on your least favorite.
I would emphasize the catfish, since they are probably the cheapest and easiest to restock and grow to large size again.

Heybud, sorry for the drought. It's getting dry up here too. I had a 1/2 acre pond go dry in 2005 that had a lot of CC in it & I was able to seine them out when the water got low enough. I put them in buckets & carried them over to another pond. I believe(but don't know for fact) that CC live better in low-water situations than LMB..Good Luck!

My wife's biggest concern if for the several family pets that we put in this summer. They are some beautiful koi. I am hoping to be able to seine them out before they are too far gone. I suppose carp are pretty sturdy and will last till towards the end.

Where will you put the koi if you are able to net any?

We plan to buy a "great big" round cattle watering thingy. Install some pumps and filters and make it into a pond until the Lazy W pond fills up again. I would imagine that the seining process is tough on an old man.

Try buying the thick plastic kind of water troughs because the metal ones eventually get holes in them & the plastic ones last forever. You can do it !! Also a long handled dip net works pretty good too. Maybe one with small holes & one with larger holes..Good luck..du
