Thanks For the update. It is always fun to get some historical information on your property. Last week Bob Lusk and I visited a man that found a book about his farm that had been written in 1931. He let us read it after we took as oath to care for it as if it was one of the kids. IT was very very interesting and reminded me that our stay is short and we are just a small piece of the picture.

Update
The guys from the Ilinois DNR came out last week and looked at the sink hole. They were very friendly and helpful. They suggested that I cover up the hole so that no animals or people(mostly trespassing hunters) fall in it and get hurt so I dragged a downed tree and a bunch of brush to cover it up. I am on their list and it will be at least 2 years before someone comes out to fix it. Since it's not in a critical area and I will not have to pay for it, I don't mind the wait.
As far as the pond, I fixed the dam and installed the overflow pipe. I have some more work to do on it but it's getting pretty close. I'll post some pictures when I get a chance.

Jeff Thanks for the update. Did they give you any idea what caused the sink hole? Not many sink holes around here so that is always interesting to me. otto

Otto, They said the were pretty sure it was an old "spar"(fluorspar)mine. Especially since there was the typical spoils pile and the info I found on the web showed an old mine being there. Although they said that the sink hole was not typical for a spar mine because of the 2 tunnels. They used a word to describe it but, of course, I can't remember it. I guess I should of brought my wife with me like when I go to the doctor, she remembers everything he says.
They told me how they would fill it in. They get a large excavator with as long a reach as possible and they cup out the area until they are sure they have reached the bottom. Then they fill it in with rip rap and top it off with soil. Hopefully I will be around when they do it. I would love to see how deep those tunnels go and what the earth looks at different depths.

Could there be any more sink holes in the area?
When you say tunnels are they man made?
