I finally caught a ten inch bluegill at the pond. It looks like she was full of eggs and pretty thick. I wish I had a scale that worked. My rapala digital scale isn't worth a crap. Any suggestions for a good scale to weigh fish accurately so I can get a better idea of their relative weights?

I can tell you right here and now that fish has a relative weight of 140 or better. You and Theo could start a Sumo-bluegill league. Bravo. I'm going to guess 1 pound, 4.5 ounces. You can start by going to Wal-Mart. They should have an economical, digital gram scale that's reasonably accurate for the money.

Way to go. I bet that fish is over a pound. Are you using the small gray Rapala scale? I have the 50 lb. model and it was accurate even while measuring 1 or 2 ounces.

Relative weight 100 for bluegill of 10 inches is 14.1 ounces, so if this fish is relative weight of 140 like I suspect, in particular because of the eggs, or tennis ball, or whatever is inside of that thing would make it's weight 1 pound and 3.7 ounces. I'm modifying my guess.

She needs more scales if she gets any bigger.

Bassandgrass, Congrats! That's a beauty. From what I understand Washington state isn't know for monster bluegills either so double the congrats! I wonder how big your males are?

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Dang that is a huge fish!
In addition to very long arms Bruce has strange ability to very accurately determine the weight of fish (like some kind of weird sixth sense) so I'm betting his revised weight determination is accurate. (Plus he could fillet that monster in 40 to 50 seconds).
Great fish!

I'll have to remember the air compressor trick. It makes that BG look huge! All kidding aside, that's a beautiful fish. I bet she's the first to the feed ring and the last to leave.

Wow! If I could catch one like that, all I would need is a 2# male to send to Cecil for a couples mounting.

WOW! That's all I'm looking for, and could die happy if I had a couple of those swimming around in the pond...or some hot oil.

Bobad, there is no supplemental feeding in my pond, just natural forage. By the way when using the air compressor anything over 10 psi gets real messy

Thanks for posting, bassandgrass. Now that you know your system is capable of 10 inchers, is your next goal 10.5 or 11? They add weight very quickly at those lengths!

That's remarkable B&G. Do you fertilize heavily or take any extraordinary measures to keep your forage plentiful? Do most of your BG have that type of WR, and what do you attribute it to?

Awesome BG.
I have an old set of produce scales. It's designed to sit on a table top and it has a tray that's about 12"x 16"x 1" deep and it has a cylindrical scale that turns behind a lighted and magnified lense behind and above the tray. It's pretty bulky and weighs about 60lbs. They pretty accurately measure to the ounce. In my county, you can get them certified for accuracy for free. All the farm markets have switched to digital scales. Check with some in your area to see if they have any of the old style for sale.

Dam nice gill.
Sorry I missed all the speculation earlier. I would guess 1lb 4oz.
And for all you hot oil types, you can't eat a BG that big until you are culling it because it's not keeping up in growth with the 12 inchers.

That is an awesome fish! I just bought a boga grip at bass pro shops and I absolutely love it! Because it is so small I can just hook it on the belt loop of my pants and I weigh almost every fish I catch. It is funny how almost every catfish has been heavier than I thought and every bass has been lighter. It is supposed to be very accurate but costs a little dough. If you buy one you will not regret it.

Nice BG. I agree with Bruce. My first thought (before I saw his guess)was RW = 135. Question - State record ?

Bobad, I don't do any fertilizing. There are plenty of caddis, damsel, dragon, and mayflies in the area. I don't have a scale yet but seems all of the BG, PS, and bass are pretty healthy for their lengths.
Dave, I would love to catch an 11 incher. I think they are in there just haven't got one on the hook (yet) ;-)
ewest, State record is 2.33pounds I've got a long way to go before that
others, thanks for the scale recomendations, looks like time to start saving.

My mom had it when she was a caterer. And yes the county guy shows up every year and certifies it. However I don't volunteer to weight customer's fish anymore. Most of them exaggerate the weight of their fish. I even had one guy decide not to mount his bass when it was under 5 lbs. and not over 6 lbs. Had a guy bring in a 4 lb. bass and swear it was over 6 lbs. too. Good God some of these people!

Anyone remember that Arrowsmith song, "My Big Ten Inch --- record?"
