An aeration system was in my future plans for our pond. I am now thinking of using some of my large boulders and stones to construct a natural looking waterfalls which I could tie into the side hill (not the dam) and empty back into the pond. I could set the pump to draw water off the deeper portion of the pond and circulate it in this fashion, as well as introduce oxygen as it cascades.

Does anyone know if a waterfalls can potentially aerate a pond in this fashion?

Depends on the demand for DO and what the falls will supply. The first basic question would be what size and depth is your pond. The smaller the pond the more likely to work. Probably wont destratify unless very small shallow pond however.

Thanks for your reply.

The pond is 1/3+ acres and, after it fills, at its deepest about 13 ft. Average depth throughout is ca. 8ft. Waterfalls have such natural beauty and sound. If I could accomplish roughly the same results as an aeration fountain, I think I will go that route.

If the gpm of the pump was comparable to that of an aeration system, I wonder if the results will likewise be similar?

This is something of the look I had in mind for a waterfalls. I would like to tie it back into the hill side so that it gives the impression that the water is flowing naturally from a spring out of the ground:

I think you could duplicate the aeration of a fountain with the falls, but I would still circulate with one well placed diffuser in conjunction with the falls with 1/3 acre.

I dont think I would use the waterfall as your sole source of aeration as it wont aerate a pond that deep. We worked with a customer who had problems and was using a waterfall as his aeration and once he added a diffuser type system he started seeing water quality improve.
