I have seen some BG and RES on there beds over the past few weeks but have not seen any bass on beds. The water in my pond is not very clear so I wasn't worried about the bass spawn. Yesterday I saw hundreds of fry near the banks and was curious what species they were. I managed to catch some in a net and they appeared to be bass fry. They had the general shape of a bass and a black line running down their side. They were about 3/4" long. Does anyone have any pictures of a BG or RES fry and what should I look for to identify them?

Here is a LMB fry, in the 1/2" to 3/4" length range. Note the lateral line running the length of the body; it's one of the first developing characteristics.

BG fry of the same size show multiple, vertical stripes.

I only put 17 adult bass in my pond and over 200 each of RES & BG so I'm surprised I haven't noticed any BG/RES fry yet. Do they hide more than the LMB fry? I have noticed the LMB fry chasing water beetles already.

Also, I never saw in LMB on beds but did see both RES & BG on their beds. I may have seen some of the BG fry and just not recognized them.

LMB usually nest a little deeper than the sunfish, hence they are harder to see on the nests.

I wonder how those fry would go with red wine.

I am in the exact same position. I just found a huge school of fry while snorkeling in the pond last Friday. I was certain that they were LMB and the recent behaviour of my adult pair makes sense now.

Yes, I only have a single pair of adult LMB in the pond. I stocked (200) 3/4" long fry a year ago and they are now between 2" and 4".

We have a very short growing season here in Canada!

I captured 10 of these fry and placed them in an aquarium to observe them closer. They are only about 3/8" long and I am assuming about a week old?
My questions are:
1) What can I feed these little guys? I crushed up some feed pellets into dust and have been trying that. |Is there something better?
2) Has there been a case of cross breeding between LMB and SMB? I have a single SMB that is about 3 1/2 pounds.

The pond is extremely clear and I am able to see everywhere down to the deepest part which is about 10 feet. The pond is approx. 3/4 acre in size.

Yes brine shrimp and krill can be purchased at pet stores or even Wal-Mart on occasion. Hatcheries have them also on occasion.

Rattletrap, you can also try some of the freeze dried fish foods you find in a pet store. A hungry fish just wants to eat. If you want to try and pellet train them, you could start them on Chiclid pellets for Oscars from Petco or Petsmart. They start at 3/32" so your baby bass could start eating those in a week or so.
