http://www.northcarolinasportsman.com/details.php?id=785 RALEIGH – A last-minute decision to go fishing with his mother netted a 13-year-old from Rocky Mount a North Carolna freshwater fish state record.
Travis Jackson reeled in a 4-pound, 15-ounce redear sunfish (shellcracker) from a private pond in Edgecombe County May 19, using a worm as bait. The fish measured 15 1/16 inches in length and 18 1/8 inches in girth. Very nice and an incredible girth, and it comes from a private pond to boot!

What a great story.
The RES wasn't only 2 or 3 snail meals short of five pounds, look at the belly on it!!!

What are you trying to say, Brettski?

I'm thinking Brettski's picture comment has something to do with the similarity of Bob's belly and the belly of that monster RES.

Looks like the RES already spawned. It may have weighed 2-3 more Oz. pre-spawn.

That's spectacular. It made my day to read that. Thanks, Shorty!

Probably lost more like 12 ozs. A 25% weight loss is common during the spawn for BG (Lepomis) and LMB .

Unless this kid is like 7' tall, I'm questioning the weight.

I would like to see more pics at diff. angles. It is weird that the tail is torn as in fanning a nest, but the belly is sunken in as a female.??

It just seems like it is not big enough to register as a 5 lb. fish (or just under 5 lbs.).
I guess I'm only questioning it in my mind. I not saying there's any high-jinks going on.

Here's a quote from your link, burger! "Holyoak's hybrid bream grow at a rate 300 times faster than the pure-strain species. " By my estimation, Holyoak's Georgia Giants will put on approximately 60 pounds of body mass per year.

Yea Bruce........
I tried the math too. How does 300 times get close to his estimation for the growth to be equivalent between 6 months and 24 months?
20 acres of trees & 3/4 acre pond.

In defense of the article, if there is a defense, I think 300% was the intention. But who knows, it's still a bunch of 'hogwash'.

I get a lot of big female largemouth bass in to mount that have worn down tails. Since the female largemouth bass does not fan the bed, it would seem there is another cause for a worn down caudal fin. Maybe old age?
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
