for you guys that skim the algae out of your ponds how do you do it... it surely cant be with a small hand skimmer on a pole like for a pool right? my pond is small and i can barely keep up with the stuff that's coming up since i used the green clean.... seems to be working but i can't get all the algae skimmed up fast enough.... is there a better way.... maybe a minnow seine? thanks. matt.
MY POND: 50'X100' (1/8 ACRE) dug in 2006. get's deep quick with a trench dug in the middle that reaches 17' deep. i have aeration. i stock bluegill, bass, trout, and perch and couple crappie.

Pool Noodles are mentioned for FA removal in the Prickly Rope thread. I wonder if anyone has tried the Prickly Rope itself on FA. I have cleared fishing lanes through FA near the shore with a garden rake myself.

For the floating stuff I use a fish dip net attached to an aluminum extended pole that I got at a building supply store. I wait until the wind blows it to one shore. I dip it out and throw it in a wheelbarrow. Then when the wheelbarrow is full I haul it off to a remote part of the property. If you had an old wheelbarrow you could drill small holes in the bottom for drainage and hold more algae.
I got the dip net from Stoney Creek Fisheries. in Michigan. Nice net for the price.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I've used an inexpensive, plastic leaf rake on an extended pole. It has worked pretty well.
20 acres of trees & 3/4 acre pond.

Stoney Creek sells a seine that is only about a foot deep. You use it to coral the floating algae in one place to dip it out.

I never tried the prickly rope on FA all by itself but I use a net sold for smelting made by Frabill I think. I use it to scoop all things from the pond. Cost about 20 bucks and extends to 8 feet. There are also some very nice nets available from places like Aquatic Ecosystems that cost a lot more but I'm sure are more durable. The Farbill nets only last me about two years if I'm careful before the hoops bend or break.
Gotta get back to fishin!
