The pond I have been managing for seveal years now has a good supply of bass and bluegill. The question I had is how big of a bass does it take to eat a 4" bluegill? Is it just if it can fit it into its mouth then it will eat it? Bluegill is the prime food souce for the bass that I know of.

Thanks if you have anymore questions ask.

Zoom, wait for the experts, but I think a bass will eat anything it can get in its mouth.Ive seen baby bass in my pond grab a minnow the same size and swim around with it cause it was too big to swallow.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I'm no expert) but I think a LMB can take down another fish 1/4 to 1/3 of it's own size.

So I would guess that a 12" bass might get down a 4" bluegill.

That is correct IMHO, Sunil.

Most reports provide LMB prey on fish 1/3 to 1/4 their length (not sure what "size" is) wrt BG. Like Theo's article on CC mouth size the same is true for LMB - it is a gape limit question not really length or size but wrt BG "height" with fins raised. That correlates to 1/3 to 1/4 a LMB's length as to BG. On GShiners the length is more like 40 to 50% of the LMB length. LMB are survivors partly because of their ability to gauge that ideal biggie sized meal they can both catch and swallow with the least expense of energy. In one study of LMB gape size and feeding using BG and tilapia the LMB took a much higher % of tilapia because it offered an easier meal for the same "size" fish (less height to length to mass).

A 14 inch bass can swallow a 4 inch bluegill. Bluegill are a little taller than most prey.
