This is a pond that I started filling last night. The greenish color (at least in my case) is due to precipitated iron that is not concentrated enough to produce a brown or orange color which one would get in a small tank. Except in really cold water, which is dense enough to slow settling, it takes about a week or two for the water to turn gin clear unless there is an algae bloom, some soil erosion, or lots of trout kick up silt.

Sure looks like an algae bloom doesn't it?


When I say gin clear I mean gin clear! I would guess if the pond was 25 feet deep I could still see the bottom. Of course it doesn't stay that way if fish are in the pond adding nutrients. Additionally in the trout pond when well flow is 24/7 it stays this green color.

I'll take your word on it Cecil, not having any personal experience with pools of gin 25 feet deep.

Another pond which was drained last fall, fish that weren't salvagable rotenoned, and refilled with well water is that way right now. I can see the bottom very easily at the max depth of 12 feet off the pier. Here is a pic I posted previously of mats of algae breaking loose and floating to the surface. The green you see is on the bottom. It'a about 8 feet deep in this picture.
