Anybody know anything about the Longear Sunfish, aka - Cherry Bream? I did a topic search and it doesn't look like anyone has talked about it yet. From the picture I saw, they look really cool, but what are the pros/cons of stocking a pond with them? If you want to check out a picture of the Longear - go to the following link and click on "Sunfish":

Size is the main downside. They typically don't get as big as bluegill and shellcrackers.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Ok, I did a little more research and wasn't aware that Longear are also called Pumpkinseed. I've found quite a few topics related to Pumpkinseeds. I thought it was strange that no one had talked about it yet......

Longears and pumpkinseeds are indeed two different, although both quite colorful, sunfishes. For those who might care: the longear sunfish is Lepomis megalotis while the pumpkinseed is Lepomis gibbosus.

There are a couple of good pictures here.

Not only that but there are two subspecies of longears.

I didn't know that!!

They sure are pretty fish. We had a lot of them in Kansas; none in South Dakota. I can't recall the biggest longears ever being more than about 4-5 inches.

Like you said, very pretty fish, but is it worth stocking a pond with either longears or pumpkinseeds? Or should I just stick with Bluegill and maybe some Redears (shellcrackers) since they grow larger? Would it hurt to have a few Longears or Pumpkinseeds in the pond just for the fun of it? What about Redbreast?......too many species......

The colorful Long Ears are a main staple of the San Marcos River, 30 miles South of Austin, TX...they thrive in 70 degree swift flowing water.
I seriously doubt that they will be able to withstand the more harsh "pond" environment.

Yes, I have text that shows central longear and I believe northern longear. Too lazy to get the book out right now. In one, the ear tab is more angled than the other and I believe also on one of the two the ear tab is less rigid and bendable.

I would shy away from too many species of sunfish as they hybridize easily in small ponds. I would stick to bluegills or bluegills with some redears (shellcrackers) to keep the snails down and add the potential for panfish bigger than bluegills.
