I was out catching fish with my daughter and and friends and my kid caught what at first I thought was a blue gill when I got over to her It looked like blue gill but had real small what appeared to be teeth and was long instead of round like the rest of my gill. It was also outlined in the most brilliant yellow all around the fins. I stocked with shellcrackers, crappie, bass, blue gill and channel cat. Can anyone Identify it right off hand? It could be a shell cracker but I really do not know? One guy from a distance even said hey what kind of bass is that? All other markings appeared to some sort of blue gill. Could it of been a hybrid????

BC, kind of sounds like the notorious green sunfish. they look like bgill but are more torpedo shaped, can have the vivid yellow as well. Add your e-mail address to your profile and I'll send you a pic comparing the green sunfish to the bluegill...compliments of Bill Cody. As for the teeth, yikes !

The teeth are very tiny but bigger per say than a bass. If you have ever held very many big bass you figure out they do have very small teeth that are hard on the thumbs. But this thing was just wiered I almost just killed it. The shape and look reminded me of a peacock bass that is the shape of the body but it was only a little bigger than my hand. My addres is updated, pics would be great. I am suppossed to be getting a pic of It I took I will email it to you if I can either tonight or tommorow.

BC,
Could you send me a pic? I am very familar with fish identification as I had to be able to identify 150 species when I was studying fisheries.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

BC, my vote is a warmouth look close, 3 anal fins :
Warmouth look similar to rock bass and green sunfish with a thick, oblong body. The mouth is large, with the upper jaw extending to or beyond the middle of the eye. The coloration is dark olive-brown and it is mottled with dark brown blotches over the body. In addition, they have dark colored stripes extending from the eye to the opercle (ear) flap. Warmouth have only three anal fin spines while rock bass have six.

You might check to see if it is pickrell. I am sure I spelled that wrong. I had a lake in east texas and the game waeden said about 30 years ago they stocked a lot small private lakes in east Texas with them.

Nope never got your pic. Title it "unknown fish" so I don't delete it off my Spam Arrest.

"Pikerel" is Canadian for "Walleye." Can anyone post this pic to the thread, otherwise tyhis could help, you can do what's called a Google Image Search here: GIS Type in warmouth, or walleye, or whatever you think this fish is and compare.

gentlemen,i did the google search and if this is the fish you caught we call these fish goggly-eye in louisiana.very common fish in the south, all most as common as the bream.they are every were down here, and not a good fish to have in a small pond.has a large mouth and will eat the same things a bass eats.they just dont get as big as bass,i would say a large goggle-eye gets to about hand size.late in the evening you can hear them pop at the suface of the water getting bugs if you have alot of them.it is a very good eating fish, and alot of fun to catch.he will hit anything a bream would eat and you can also catch them on small to medium size bass baits.i've heard other people call them warmouth but to us it's a goggle-eye.

bc, did you say in another thread that your pond is stream fed? I think you mentioned one stream at the shallow end and two more "wet weather" streams.
I think that for any stream fed pond, seasonal or not, any kind of fresh water fish can get into your pond.
So your unknown fish could be a warmouth that just came down the stream from somewhere else.
Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:" "She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."

BC, It's definitely not a Warmouth (Lepomis gulosis)It's either a Green Sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) or predominately a Green Sunfish.(Green Sunfish X Bluegill hybrid) The following is a part of a link for some excellent photos of various panfish including the Green Sunfish and the Warmouth. Obviously photos are not the only thing used to identify a species ,but I have seen so many of the fish you have a picture of I have no doubts what it is. http://www.cnr.vt.edu/efish/families/greensun.html

Thanks all I also believe it to be a grenn sunfish or a hybrid, what ticks me off is that I specifically said no hybrids and still got them. I may call and have a talk with the old man.

Fenders fish hatchery in Ohio up Rt 77 towards akron. He was recomended buy the gy who built my pond He just raves about how great he was when he stocked his pond? Live and learn! I am going to try another called Fenders in Southern ohio see if they are any better. Sometimes a traveling truck comes through and puts an add in the paper some say he has good fish and pretty big but I have not heared anything about him lately. I tried to order some thought they could send them ups overnight but for some reason you cant do that either, government regs?? You would think they could ship them within the same state. Fish aquariums di it every day, must be different somehow. So any way it looks igf I will have to drive 3-4 maybe 5 hours to find some maybe farther????Welcome to Ohio/west by God Virginia, yee haw....Chemical capital of the world.
