"S un's 'disturbingly quiet' cycle prompts fear of global COOLING... "Solar activity fluctuates in an 11-year cycle. But so far in this cycle, the sun has been disturbingly quiet. The lack of increased activity could signal the beginning of what is known as a Maunder Minimum, an event which occurs every couple of centuries and can last as long as a century.
Such an event occurred in the 17th century. The observation of sunspots showed extraordinarily low levels of magnetism on the sun, with little or no 11-year cycle.
This solar hibernation corresponded with a period of bitter cold that began around 1650 and lasted, with intermittent spikes of warming, until 1715. Frigid winters and cold summers during that period led to massive crop failures, famine and death in Northern Europe. http://ibdeditorial.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=287279412587175

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Say it ain't so Al! Don't let the internet that you invented spread this vile, blasphemes, assault on your global warming scheme....
Oh well, I can get an auger to cut ice, and as long as it is only the French Europeons freezing....Well I'm cool with that.

There are many weather crack pots out there. It was -14 here last night so this one may be right.

Some of the Canadians on IceShanty.com are complaining it is too cold to icefish. 40 some below actual temperature. They said that was even cold for them and it hasn't been this cold in years. That's what we icefishermen call a no flop day. The fish freezes instantly out of the water and doesn't even get a chance to flop. There are one flop days, two flop days, three flop days...

Looks like we should start a thread on Managing Ponds for Global Cooling. Maybe the guys in TX could stock some Northern vareties of fish sometime in the future. http://www.ucar.edu/news/releases/2006/sunspot.shtml The Predictive Flux-transport Dynamo Model is enabling NCAR scientists to predict that the next solar cycle, known as Cycle 24, will produce sunspots across an area slightly larger than 2.5% of the visible surface of the Sun. The scientists expect the cycle to begin in late 2007 or early 2008, which is about 6 to 12 months later than a cycle would normally start. Cycle 24 is likely to reach its peak about 2012.
http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn13153-maverick-sunspot-heralds-new-solar-cycle.html January 2008 A new 11-year solar cycle has officially begun, now that a sunspot has been found with a magnetic field pointing in the opposite direction from those in the previous cycle. However, it might be a little early to say that the next Maunder Minimum is currently under way.
