Hey, I have been reading this forum for a few months and I appreciate you guys sharing your knowledge on here for everyone.

In October of 2007 I finished digging a 1/2 acre pond in Birch Run, MI. The entire pond is pure clay, about 20 feet deep in the deepest hole. I had it dug pretty steep to control weeds, and because I knew later on I would be digging the pond bigger with my backhoe, which only digs about 14 feet down.

The pond will be for swimming and fishing. By this spring I should have at least 14-16 feet of water. I was thinking about adding 10lbs of FHM once the ice is gone, and adding some yellow perch around April or early May. I want my main predator fish to LMB, since they seem to be easy to raise and awesome to catch. I dont want to have to worry about bluegills overwhelming my pond or biting my kids when they swim, so thats why I chose yellow perch.

So, what are some numbers I should stock with? I was thinking 25-30 bass in August or so and maybe 100 perch. I plan on sotcking fatheads every spring and a little bit of hand feeding once a week. Thanks for the advice

Hey Rex,
Look forward to seeing the suggestions. You may want to check a thread I started, although I may be going with SMB.

I will be watching this closely, congrats on the new pond and good luck.

Rex welcome to the PB Forum. Take a look at this archive thread on Northern ponds including the links in the posts.

Hello Tororider, I read your thread and liked your ideas. I picked LMB only because they are easier to find, more likely to spawn, and have the potential to get a little larger. I did like your idea about the YP.

I would like some suggestions on numbers and sizes of fish I should target. Thanks

Still looking for some stocking numbers. 100 perch, 100 RES, 25 LMB, how's that sound?

More YP and RES?
