Deer season is just three weeks away here in Texas. I planted some soybeans back in June but they didn't turn out as well as I would like. We are also going to plant winter wheat and hopefully peas and clover. We should be getting a fence up around our property pretty soon, so my dad has been thinking about adding some protein feed to our feeders. We are also putting up four more box stands.

This buck survived the season, so hopefully I can see him this year.

So is anybody else getting ready deer season?

I don't bow hunt so I still have to wait for November. I'm also waiting for rain to plant wheat. I understand that wheat seed, like corn, has skyrocketed.

Actually, opening weekend, for me, is the last weekend in October. That's kids hunting weekend. I get to take my Grandson. Last year we saw no deer but, just at dusk, he shot a pig. He had just turned 8 and did a world class hoochie koochie around the pig. Later he got a cull buck. Those were the highlights of hunting season for me. As usual, I saw a lot but shot nothing.

My wife's planting oats this year in Summer pastures for a late-season boost in horse forage (16-17% protein). They're pretty cheap, up here at least, DD. And they'd be good for your deer's cholesterol.

Right now our family's main deer season prep consists of my Son trying (successfully, so far) NOT to get a deer on his driving learner's permit.

I just fatten them up for somebody else to shoot. We have a doe and fawn that spend a lot of time on our wooded 20 acres. I plant some food plots(2+ acres) for them every year. I normally feed them corn during the winter ....... hope 40# bags aren't $8 again this year.

20 acres of trees & 3/4 acre pond.

I can't wait. Of course, we don't have many deer like the picture that Chris took, down here in South Louisiana. There's nothing like being in the woods alone, hearing only the sounds of nature for hours on end. And if you're a religious person, its the perfect place for strengthing your relationship with God, or whoever you believe in.

RT, I didn't think the goal was to scare the deer.

Bruce, that's just RT's way of saying "sure I might scare the sh*t out of you, but just in case, I'm prepared in case you scare the sh*t out of me!"

I have went bowhunting the past two weekends and haven't seen anything. The deer are there, they just dont come out during the day.

I am guessing this buck 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old. I think we saw him last year and he had about a 13 inch spread.

Chris, that's a beauty. Due to finally getting plentiful rains, most guys are seeing bigger racks this year.

Due to the heavy acorn drop, I haven't even started my corn feeders. I'll do it this weekend and also put up my game cameras. I haven't been to my place in 2 weeks and am having withdrawals. I've talked to local neighbors on the phone and nobody is even seeing deer. They have no reason to move from the brush. Two weeks from now is Kids hunting weekend and my Pardner is pretty excited. He got his first hog and buck last year and is totally pumped. Dang, I hope they start moving.

I planted 1,000 pounds of wheat seed a month ago. We had gotten 2 inches of rain but it hasn't rained since. A lot of it germinated and died. Some of it came up and did OK but I'm wondering how it has done in the past 2 weeks. At $9.60 per fifty pound bag, I hate to replant.

I cut our feeder back this past weekend from 8 seconds per day to 4 seconds per day. They have been eating the corn but it was still covering the ground. The acorns are everywhere down here also.

I think we ended up planting wheat, rye, and oats. We have had 6-7 insches of rain since we planted and it has come up pretty good.

George, the back strap eats much better than the antlers. \:\)

Opening weekend was good to me this year. I got a big, 200 - 250 lb boar, and a nice 12 point buck. I haven't had that kind of luck in the last 10 years.

Here's the buck... he's got two kickers coming out the back of his brow tines, but basically a mainframe 10 pointer.
